Default 4870 x2 compatibility

I Have just purchased an x2 to replace my gtx280. When placed in my old
test bed PC with Asus Striker Extreme and real crappy PSU it works fine with
my E6400 CPU 3GB Corsair RAM and CRT monitor. So I cheerfully grabbed the
card to install in my top PC with Hiper 880W PSU, 8GB DDR2 RAM and water
cooled Q6600 CPU all in my Antec 900 case with an Abit IP43 mobo. The PSU
leads refused to connect so I had to improvise with 8pin connector from one
rail and 6pin connector from the other VGA rail. Sometimes it POSTs and
other times the fan refuses to come down from full speed and nothing
happens. Hmm?????
When I do get it to POST it rarely gets to Vista with the fan suddenly
picking up speed and the screen goes blank. Twice I have managed to get it
to Vista and install a driver but if anything other than idle is required
then the fans speeds up and the screen goes again.
This PSU is recommended on the ATI site so I cant see why it should be an
issue but then again what do I know.
Any advice?
What am I doing wrong?
Whats better a q6600 at 2.7GHz (max)on an NVIDIA 680i board with 4870x2 or a
3.2GHZ (3.5GHz max) Q6600 with a GTX280 on an IP43 board.

There are no known compatibility issues between the 4870X2 and Abit IP43.

So the Q6600 in your "top PC" is overclocked? Is it running higher voltage,
too? Bring all CPU + RAM clocks and voltages to stock levels and see if the
system POSTs reliably. If it does, then gradually work up one item at a
time.

The 4870X2 can function with 2x 6-pin power connectors. So hook it up with
the same wiring setup as when you had the GTX280 in there and see if that
helps.

The Q6600 PC reboots to default settings. The voltages etc.. are all
default, even the ABIT logo comes on but once in a while the darn thing
POSTs. I took the Card down to the old PC (e6400 3GHZ) and connected up and
all is well, first time POST and even benchmarking software all runs even in
WIN7.
I haven't had time yet but I am going to try putting the crappy 850W PSU
into the Q6600 PC.
I have reservations but if it works it works!

Rebuild started today. The AlphaCool 850w was installed in the Antec and
all wired up. It POSTed and went straight into Vista. Halfway through the
CAT installation it crashed and then started the same routine as before,
some POSTs but all crashing with a rapid spinning of the fan.
The problem seems to be based around the ABIT board.
In the ASUS all's well but I can't run my CPU as fast and the Core2 CPU
MAXES AT 3GHz (from 2.1GHZ, that's not bad!) and the 3D mark score is about
a third of the ABIT system but the ASUS has a huge lead in the GPU score due
to its dual GPUs.
Hmmmmmm!

Still not sure what to do but I don't want to be out any more money for
components that may or may not work.

The Corsair 550 watt ps works just fine with the 4870x2. Experienced none of
the problems you outline.
I run the fan in the ATI control panel in auto. Actually all fans. I have
the right side case panel removed and a fan ty wrapped in place to push air
over/past/in the ATI card. In 2D the fan on the ATI 4870x2 goes quiet.
Playing World of Warcraft or Tomb Raider to name two games gets the fan
turning faster and noisier. By design.

So I took the generic HP built machine and stuffed in the 4870x2 and 550
watt power supply with success. The HP mobo chipset must be in support of
crossfire if I understand that issue.
Does your mobo support crossfire ?

One of the selling points of an X2 card is that you don't need a
Crossfire-capable motherboard to experience dual-GPU operation.
