Default Upgrade question

I have a a7n8x-deluxe with a 3200+ cpu, ATI 9800 Pro and would like to
know which motherboard I could upgrade to that would use the same nvidia
drivers that I have loaded now? I can't afford to have the machine be down
for very long so I would like the fastest motherboard/cpu combo that will
use my existing drivers etc. Can anyone make a suggestion? TIA

I've always believed it would be a mistake to switch motherboards with
the expectation that a previously installed operating system would
continue to work properly. I can understand your desire to upgrade your
motherboard, but I recommend that when you do it you should plan to do a
clean intall of your operating system and drivers. If I'm wrong about
this, I'd like someone to tell me. Sure would be easier to be able to
just switch motherboards, plug in the old boot drive and other hardware,
and keep going. But I think that even if it CAN be done, the results
will (almost?) always make the user wish it HADN'T been done.

Or maybe I misunderstood your question?

Your best option is to build a completely new machine with the latest
parts and burn it in with the software you need to run. Then swap it
out with your old machine.

I will take your advice and bite the bullet and do it. My machine
is so darn stable that I want a faster machine but if it ain't broke
don't fix it! Thanks.

Well done, Bill - you won't regret taking that excellent advice.
I also have A7N8X-deluxe with the same graphics and CPU -
an extremely capable system which is still in use doing other
things.

My replacement machine was built around the P5W DH and
a Core2Duo CPU (E6600) which is overclocked by 25%
by simple FSB increase. I couldn't be happier with it.
I'd pick a more recent mobo and quad core CPU, if I was
doing it today though.

Cheers,

Your problem is your present PC is top of the line for it's era. Good
MB, fast CPU, fast VC, for it's era. That era passed into history 3~4
hardware generations ago. Finding anything that would be an
improvement using that era's drivers would be difficult at best and
certainly not justifiable for the expense.

A PC using today's components could be built for probably the same
expense of upgrading and be WAAAAyyy faster and just as stable. Take
what you put into the original components and apply the price to
todays parts. For example, My ATI 9800 cost me around $350.00 USD when
I bought it. For that price you can get a Nvidia 8800gt or an ATI 3870
that support DX10 and are blazingly faster in DX9 and have money left
over.

$50.00 will get you 2GB of DDR2 800 ram < cheap at the moment >.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145034

$130.00 will get you an AMD Dualcore that's unlocked and easily oc'd
to 3 GHz.

A few more dollars and you get:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103226

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115018

Applicable motherboards from $50 to $300. Just a pantheon of choices.

Scary, isn't it.
