Default P5Q PRO TURBO hangs up on first window when booting or rebooting

Hi all,

Sometimes when I turn my P5Q PRO TURBO on or reboot it will hang up in
the first window and the only way I can get it to continue booting up
is to press the reset button. That particular window comes up twice
in the rebooting sequence under a normal boot or reboot. Is there a
remedy. Description of system below.

The only times I have had a similar problem was with a marginal power
supply, sometimes taking up to a half hour to boot, and with an external
USB hard drive. The first problem was fixed with a better power supply
and the second by disconnecting the drive before booting.

You listed everything but the power supply and the symptoms you describe
could be an under powered PSU.
When you 1st boot there is not enough power to spin everything up...but a
reset does not cut the power to everything and
all of a sudden every thing powers up because some of the hardware still has
power.

All the data that I posted I used Belark Adviser to get and I went
back and checked and I guess the only thing that it doesn't show is
power supply which is a 500 watt Thermaltake. I have tested the watt
load at boot up and it's about 115 W ever take.

I'll keep an eye on that.

Like I told Michael is a 500 W unit. I think if it's working properly
that should be plenty.

Thanks, I think I'm put it to bed and I will finish this tomorrow.

Morning!

Okay, I did another test with my Kill a Watt tester and this is what I
got.
Startup
From .04 to 84 W first window, 115 W (+ or - 2 W) loading Windows,
highest point was 160 W while Windows Live Messenger loaded in after
which with computer running idol- @ 109-113 W.
Shutdown
129-112 to .04 watt (meter shows a .04 reading with nothing plugged
in).

When I shut down and then plugged from the meter and plugged
everything back and started up it hung up on the first window again
punch the reset button and it booted properly.

Even though the power supply may have sufficient output for the load it
may still not be putting out enough on one of the rails when starting.
The one I mentioned worked fine for months at a time as long as the
computer was not turned off. This is a very hard problem to diagnose
without a spare supply to swap in for a quick test.

I do thank you for the information but unfortunately I do not have an
extra power supply available at this time but it's a good suggestion.
It hasn't done it again since my last post here??? I guess I'll just
have to keep an eye on everything.
