Default P4C800-E Dlx - why so many bad ones on Ebay & versions ?

I am looking for a 478 mobo. The P4c800-E Deluxe seems to have plenty
of features. However, I've noticed a very high number of failed boards
on Ebay (four right now) that won't boot, post, etc.

I know Ebay can be a dumping ground, but that seems like an awful lot
of failed boards for an Asus product. Are there a lot of problems with
this board?

Also, I've seen a number of folks ask whether the board is version
2.0. What is the significance of a version 2.0 board i.e. do I want to
make sure I get one?

Thanks,

I remember something about bad capacitors and I think that was taken care of
with the next revision. I am running a P4P800se on my backup system and it
has
preformed well for me thru the years.

The P4C800-E Deluxe systems we had built are still in operation. IMO,
I would hazard a guess that a span of 4 to 5 years represents a good
life for any computer and it is quite possible that those units that
are being disposed of are showing signs of age or have ran into issues.
We had custom-built about 20 units and took very good care of them.
They are also working under pretty decent environmental conditions, viz.,
a hospital, on a 24/7 basis.

Don't know about a Version 2. The Asus P5 line with Intel's LGA775
socket came shortly after our builds...we had the last of the batch.

Have a look through the Asus forum, to see what problems are common.

http://vip.asus.com/forum/topic.aspx...Language=en-us

I have that board, and the caps are still good on mine. I'm typing
on it right now, and it gets a lot of use. I don't know about
revision, because my PCI slots are filled, and it is hard to see
the label on the board.

The thing I worry about on mine, is the fact that the board has
an ICH5 family Southbridge. There were failures on some of those
reported several years ago. And it seems to be related to USB
ports and CMOS latchup, based on the symptom descriptions and
results. I've never seen an official statement from Intel, so
it was all swept under the rug.

If the ICH5 has a burn mark on top, the board won't POST. If the
ports failed without the chip burning, then you'll see USB stuff
listed in Device Manager, but there will be no response when
USB devices are plugged in. A USB card can be used to work around
that, with the exception perhaps of having BIOS functionality if
all you've got is a USB keyboard. I have a PS/2 keyboard and I'm
not worried about that part. But if my chip burned, the board
would be finished.

I think you have rather low expectations.

- My Asus P4C800ED-based PC, built in Sep'04, runs fine; 24x7.

- My Asus K7M-based PC, built in Dec'99, runs fine; 24x7.

- My oldest PC, upgraded to an Asus P55T2P4 MB in Nov'96, runs fine; 24x7.
But, I had to slow it down from 233MHz to a mere 210MHz, to make it stable.

I don't think the capacitor problem was taken care of while the boards
were still being built. I had to RMA my P5P800 about six months ago
because of a bad capacitor causing random reboots.

The bad capacitor problem was a number of years before the P4C800-E Deluxe.
