Default New P5E3 dlx won't make sound - what am I missing?

Hi,

I've got a new P5E3 that I haven't been able to get sound out of.

- HD audio is enabled in the BIOS onboard device setup.
- XP professional installed.
- AC976 software and drivers installed.
- Everything looks good in the device manager, no yellow exclamation marks.
- The AC97 control panel detects stereo speakers when I plug the speakers
into the lime green connector.
- All the volume controls are turned up and unmuted.
- The speakers are good, they work when I plug them into my ipod

However, no sound comes out, either using the AC97 wizard, or the windows
system sounds.

What am I missing? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you checked with Device manager that all is functioning. Is it SP3
(big issues with onboard sound) or SP2.
I had to install vista instead of XP because I couldn't get the sound to
work. HDAudio bus not found.
Make sure any of the volume controls aren't muted. Sometimes can be an
easily overlooked issue.
Maybe an older driver may work when the new one doesn't.

Hi Robin,

Everything is happy in the Device Manager. I'm using SP3, I'll have to look
into the issues.

However, it hadn't occurred to me to try a different driver (well, it looked
like it was working). I downloaded and installed the latest sound driver
from Asus, and it works now. duh.

Thanks - John

The P5E3 motherboard has a Realtek ALC 883 8 -Channel High-Definition
Audio CODEC, not AC97.
