I have an Asus A7n8x deluxe and find the strangest thing running Windows XP
and then Vista. That is my cpu temps are running a full 10-12 degrees
lower using Vista.
The temperature differences are seen using MotherBoard monitor. It does the
same thing on an upgrade or a clean install. Has anyone else seen this
and/or know why that is? Or could it be Motherboard monitor itself?
Whatever it is, it's a huge difference.

Fan speed the same in both cases ? Same version of MBM5 ?
There is a "bus disconnect" feature, which is supposed to save
power. I believe it is typically not enabled by the Asus BIOS.
It may also cause problems - the poster in this thread is asking
if anyone has problems with their audio. The implication is, that
if the processor does a "bus disconnect", it affects audio playback.
This thread mentions that Speedfan (almico.com) has some capabilities
like that, to set the bus disconnect. You could try that in WinXP, and
see if you can match the lower Vista temperatures.
It could be that Vista is doing some things which only auxiliary cooling
programs used to do. Just a guess. Otherwise, it is hard to believe
that Vista is easier on the processor.

Thanks for the tips, Paul. I'm mystified but have noticed it for some time.
I'm an MS beta tester so had Vista since the beginning of the beta. The
only difference is the OS. I've done both upgrades of XP and clean installs
of Vista and seen the same thing. Same version of MB Monitor which is
5.3.7. Just today I did download Speedfan to Vista as I'd previously used
that on XP also. I wanted to check to see if the temps were the same as MB
monitor and they are. I may go back to XP and try that again along with
it's bus disconnect but believe I did once before with no results.
Before this Asus Nforce board, I ran a Via chipset with a program called
Vcool. That always lowered my temps by about 10C on XP when the system was
relatively idle. That was only for Via chipsets tho so when I installed the
Asus board my temps were always about 10-12C higher I tried cpu-Idle on the
Asus board with no results. As you've said, I don't think the Asus board
supported the bus disconnect.
The only other difference is the hard drives. I'm running the same system
with drive trays so only have to remove the XP drive and put the Vista drive
in. They're both 40gig Maxtor drives. But again, I've done upgrades from
XP to Vista and noticed the same thing on the same drive. Vista must be
doing something different to see this much of a temperature decrease.

I thought the A7N8X deluxe was not able to run Vista because of the nForce2
boards not being compatible (no Vista drivers for nForce2). I have an
A7N8X-E deluxe. What drivers are you using for Vista?

Hmm, never heard that before. I've been running it since the beta testing
phase. I do have to install some drivers from my original Asus CD but Vista
doesn't have any problems with them. A couple get updated after installing
the ones from the CD. I think the Raid controller was one that didn't get
picked up at all and had to be installed from my CD.
