In order to turn my wma files into mp3s, (no posts about copy rights
please) I use a small program called "MP3 My MP3". It captures the
playing WMA at the sound card output and makes the mp3 out of that.
On my Asus P5KPL-VM, the program cannot get the list of sound inputs,
and does not hear anything while the music plays. The program works
fine on my other P4V800 as well as my Latitude. Windows XP everywhere.
I also tried other sound capture programs, same results.
Any idea what the problem is? Can someone suggest a different set of
audio drivers?

"Cons: Despite what it claims, it DOES NOT record from all audio
sources if your sound card doesn't support the "Stereo Mix"
or "Wave Out Mix" option to start with (e.g., Dell's onboard
SigmaTel)."
Maybe the program simply doesn't deal with all audio standards well.
The P5KPL-VM has Realtek ALC662 HDaudio, and maybe it is a problem
with HDaudio.
I do see a "Stereo Mix" shown in the panel here, though.

Yes, Media Player 9 and "MP3 My MP3" as well as MagicSoft's "Sound
Capture"

I just tried this one, and it complains: "The following file can NOT
be read correctly" and mentions something about a missing codec. The
Help button has no effect. May be you can recommend a solution for
that?
