I'm a hobbiest who's built my last 3 systems but it has been
about 4-5 years since I built my current system which is running
a Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard with an Athlon 2800 chip. My
wife informed me a few days ago to start shopping for a new
computer as she wants her own and my current system is more than
enough for her to web surf and e-mail with a few games on the
side.
I'm looking on which board to consider that meets the following:
1. Price - Must be no more than $150.00 (US)
2. Must have ability for more than 4 gigs ram - I'll probably
start off with 3 gigs.
3. Must accomodate Athlon dual core processor, I'm leaning
towards a processor for now that is no more than $150 to $175
4. No onboard video
5. Good onboard sound - For no more than I use the audio, this
is fine but I still want good sound if possible. The onboard
sound on my current system is fine.
6- Must support some form of IDE devices and allow for front
1394 (at least 1) and usb ports (4-6 of these)
Any adice you can give is appreciated as I've been out of the pc
shopping mode for awhile.
Off-Topic - I also plan on about $150-$200 on a video card. Is
Nvidia still a good choice? I want a card that has video in as
well as out. Plus one that supports Vista and it's hi-def
graphics for Blu-Ray and such. Any links are appreciated here
too!
Thanks for your help!

I just built my first system using an M2N-SLI Deluxe and I'm happy
with it. I think it meets all your requirements.
It's more geared to SATA than IDE. It supports IDE, but it supports
lots and lots of SATA.
It supports 8 GB of ram, though Windows (depending on the version)
apparently puts some limitations on going above 3GB.
It allows for up to 10 USB ports. 4 are on the back panel, the others
are where you want to put them. And at least a couple 1394 ports and
at least one of those can be up front.
I'm using it with an Athlon X2 4600
I paid $130 at Newegg
