Default system won't go in stand-by mode

My aspire 3630 seems not to be able to go into standby mode. When i select
standby then the system starts to shutdown, and a popup comes up that the
system has a problem due to the touchpad driver. Reinstalling the driver did
not help. I am using the synaptics 8.3.4.0 driver dated 19-5-2006.
Installing the driver from the acer site did not solve the problem.
Any tips?

If Vista, don't try standby. Shutdown instead.

IME with XP it SHOULD work although I have found it to be cranky and not
always successful. It seems to depend on what software programs and drivers
are running.
