Default Suggestions for SATAII Hard drives

I have a Abit AN8 Ultra motherboard with a nforce4 Ultra chipset.
With the latest BIOS and drivers
I have read these have a lot of problems with Sata Hard drives.
I had a Samsung HD753LJ 750GB Hard Drive SATAII but fdisk and format could
only find 196GB space on the disk.
The BIOS showed the disk and disk size correctly.
So any suggestions for SATAII Hard drives In the 500 to 750 GB range, that
might work with this motherboard.

Hmmm... Seems to me that if the bios saw it correctly but the fdisk
program didn't, the problem would be with the version of fdisk you are
using.

You can fdisk and format the hd using an me boot disk but it will not report
the
correct capacity. As soon as you start the xp install it will show the
correct size.
Why not just fdisk and format using the xp cd ?

Do you seriously mean three gigabytes ?

Just a thought btw. I'm not that familiar with SATA. Might the SATA interface
chip require a device driver that's not going to be on the ME boot disk ? I've
had no trouble Fdisking, formatting etc PATA drives using an ME boot disk.

Were you trying to FAT32 format the 750GB drive with the WinME disk?
Trying to format a large FAT32 partition with XP?

There was a thread here in 2006 about Win9x and whopping big hard
drives. This post sums it up:
http://groups.google.co.in/group/alt...53c7bde086c595

That thread led me to:
http://www.48bitlba.com/win98.htm

"System tools in Windows 98 and Me do not work with 48-bit LBA hard
drives. Specifically... and Fdisk tools do not work with the larger hard
drives."

"Unfortunately, FDISK, the tool for partitioning a hard drive with
Windows 98 or Me does not support 48-bit LBA."

From the above links, and info from MS pages, I learned that WinXP can
access existing large FAT partitions, but can't create them. Win9x can
create larger FAT partitions than XP can, but still can't reliably
format disks larger than 120GB total, even if they're partitioned into
smaller pieces. Drive vendors may offer utilities to partition and FAT
format large drives, and XP can then access them, but 9x still won't be
able to reliably.
