What are you insinuating Tony? That Dell owners are *not* allowed to
discuss office suites on their Dell computers here? And if so, what else
is also off topic here? For example OS, drivers, WiFi, Internet, and
other problems as well? Last time I checked, this newsgroup isn't
limited to just Dell hardware alone.

Thanks Christopher! Yes that is the way I tried it and it seemed to be
sorting on another character (instead of the first one on each line).
Instead of figuring out why this was happening, I knew WordStar for DOS
can do this for the first character or any other column you want too (no
need for separators or even spaces). The only bad news about using
WordStar is the text must be in 7-bit. Meaning only ASCII 0 through 127
can be used (in WS non-document mode). Which isn't a problem with most
plain text anyway. ;-)

It is a little OT but I do have a Dell laptop and Dell desktop.
I have been using Excel since Multiplan days (pre-excel microsoft
spreadsheet) so I am very comfortable with it. I use to get a free copy and
license through my employer but I'm now retired so I'm on my own for
upgrades.
Thanks to all who replied to my original post.

Completely on-topic. Glad you've found a solution or answer.

I've also been using Excel since Multiplan. I am going to start using
the spreadsheet in Open Office. I hope it has good macro / scripting
support.
