there are no guarantees that the chkdsk /r from the recovery console will
solve the problem, but it is certainly worth a try. and your data is likely
not lost and probably can be recovered as mentioned above. i suggest you
try other media in the optical drive, the one that you are using might not
be bootable though you think it is.

Believe me, I have. Cds & Dvds that played in it previously no longer
do. The Windows XP disc does not. Nor does the disc drive cleaner I got
when it first stopped working.

given that both the hard disk and cd drives developed a problem at the same
time sounds very suspicious.
perhaps jay b has it right with the suspicion that the board has overheated
and it is now garbage.
read up on the issue hear found under inspiron 5150...
