this is why i suggested looking up the original system configuration via the
service tag. then you know what components that you have and can more
easily download the appropiate drivers.

Thanks very much for that info Stew. My service Tag is 98FKJ2J and that's
what I'm searching for on the Dell support sites.

I'm looking at the points you make & will see if they clear up my problem.

I don't think I have a graphics accelerator card but I MAY have a TV tuner
although I've never used it: I think it may come on those pcs running XP
Media Centre Edition

I've now installed everything apart from the multimedia video controller.
the original configuration simply referred to a TV Tuner - Integrated
Analogue PCI & Dell.

I'm going through the several TV drivers on the support site & hopefully
will soon find one which matches.

Okay, so from your tag, here are the video/audio items listed:

-GRAPHIC CARD 256MB ATI RADEON X1300 PRO
http://tinyurl.com/57dnss (*It appears you may have this one already
installed properly)

-AUDIO SOFTWARE INTEGRATED SOUND BLASTER
http://tinyurl.com/6s49qv

-TV TUNER INTEGRATED ANALOGUE PCI & DELL
http://tinyurl.com/572r6p (*This one is a shot in the dark other than the
"Dell" reference. There are at least 3-4 TV tuner drivers listed on the
page for your system )

You do NOT have the PhysX card I listed earlier.

Thank you Tom; I've now installed the ethernet controller & the audio codec.
I do have a tuner but it is simply described as a "TV Tuner - Integrated
analogue PCI & Dell. I've tried installing various TV drivers including the
Angel one but I'm still getting a question mark against the multimedia
controller. As I don't intend using the TV tuner I'm content for the device
to remain uninstalled.

thank you Christopher. The original configuration tag describes the device
as a TV Tuner- Integrated Analogue PCI & Dell.

As I probably won't be using the TV tuner I'm content for the device to
remain uninstalled

They have to be on your Dell drivers CD!

I suspect that it is an Angel, but I'm guessing the OP is in the UK and
I think that's PAL, not NTSC, isn't it?
