Looking at a system today, I noticed that both the hard drive and
optical drive were on the same IDE cable in a master-slave
arrangement. Given that one of the complaints was slow burning, I
decided to move the optical drive onto the other IDE interface making
it master. However, when I did this, leaving the hard drive on the
original cable, the system refused to boot up giving me a system not
found error. BIOS settings were all good, drives were discovered
correctly, etc. When I switched it back to the original config
everything worked as previously. Any thoughts?

Wd hard drive? If so, the jumper for master/slave must be removed to
set it as single drive.

I second tpow, with the IDE drive I have, it says for the jumper to be
removed if it is the only drive on the IDE port.

It is a WD drive. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try this tonight.
Do you think it will improve the CD/DVD performance?

So I removed all the jumpers from the WD drive and it worked fine. I
set the optical drive to Master on the second channel but could not
get it to work. Best I got was that it was recognized as HL-DT ST
DVDRAL FS@-4167B instead of HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B by BIOS and XP.
So maybe its the cable I thought: pulled optical drive and moved HD to
that interface and it was incorrectly recognized as VDB VD2500JB,
00RDA0 instead of WDC WD2500JB-00REA0. So I put everything back to
original config, M-S arrangement on the first IDE channel and
everything is good. Is my second IDE interface damaged? Any idea how
that could have happened with normal use?

Sure sounds like it. Did you build the system? If not, and it came
with both drives on ide0 it could be that the person who built it knew
ide1 was *******.

I built the system and put everything on the same IDE cable from the
beginning because that's the way it was on the previous m/b. I'll
check the m/b manual tonight to see if there is anything obvious I'm
missing and will post any more info.
