Exactly what makes you say that? XP will continue to get updates and
patches for a while. All they are saying now is that we should not
expect to see another service pack...

Go check the Ballmer press releases. He said it, not me.

With more to come. There are some really bad bugs in Leopard that may
not get fixed until the next major release. And for all you want to say
about Microsoft, at least they allow you buy and use an older O/S. Apple
refuses to sell or even allow the installation of Tiger on new machines.
If the roles were reversed and Microsoft tried to pull that, there'd be
quite an uproar.

Not that rare. I have XP Pro SP3 on a desktop and laptop and Vista
Ultimate 64 SP1 on my main machine.

Here's my opportunity to show some objectivity regarding the Mac OS
because I have posted mainly positive things since I tried it again
starting in Nov. with Leopard (10.5).
All I need are a few bullet points and I'll try not to write a book:
- If I had to get one laptop, it wouldn't be a Mac. I think the Mac
hardware is nowhere near as durable as a Latitude or ThinkPad.
- My 2nd PC would be a Mac, only after having a solid Windows PC.
- For corporations, I don't see how Apple's update process is
acceptable. Apple often doesn't even tell what bugs an update is
fixing.
- Microsoft Word 2003 starts up in about 1 second on my ThinkPad. It
takes 29 seconds for Word 2008 to start up on my MacBook.
So, what both of you say is true -- the Mac OS has patches and
updates, and may need more because as market share increases more
hackers will target it.
And, from what Bob says Apple's already done a "June Microsoft" with
it's OS (i.e. the prior version already isn't available on new
machines).

My Inspiron 600m did just fine over the Internet. For what it's worth, my
Dimension 4600 took SP3 without a hitch either. Lucky me I guess.

I can't get my Lenovo ThinkPad to automatically download Vista SP1. I
don't know if that's good or bad.

Not to drag things too far off-topic (feel free to ignore this posting if
you want to see only Dell items!)
I still haven't seen much trouble from the desktop version. That said...
....
The server version of Mac OS X 10.5 is miserable in every way, shape and
form. After what I've been through with it, I've felt very inclined to fold,
spindle and mutilate. :-) I have high hopes that Apple will address some of
the issues. Surely they can--Tiger server was and continues to be extremely
stable.
Re: Continuous Reboots Plague Windows XP SP3 Users
Hi!
From what I've read, the issue seems to lie with preloaded copies of Windows
that were put on finished computer systems from a master image containing
both Intel and AMD processor drivers.
Well...I wouldn't run a computer with the factory supplied mess, err,
preloaded software. I don't trust it, don't want many of the things that are
installed and will decide for myself what goes back in after the OS. In
fact, I would certainly recommend doing your own installations (and
insisting upon having real reinstallation CDs for the OS and applications)
when you get a new computer. That way it will be at its best.

Wow, does that ever date you! (and me, too, of course, admitting that I
know the origin of "fold, spindle and mutilate"!
A real blast from the past.
I'm curious now, how many people on the NG have ever seen punched cards?
