Default Vista on old Dell 4500 ?

When I decide to test Vista, I was wondering if I can first install it
on an old dell 4500 (768 megs ram) for test purposes only? Will it
install and will it run at all? If it runs slowly thats okay since I
will be just testing it on that pc for a short time. I'm aware I
could either dual boot or swap drives on my newest pc but I'd prefer
to just test it on the old one for the moment unless it won't run at
all.

Yes, it will run. I've done it myself on a 4550.

Thanks Stew. I was just checking the net and saw someone did a 4500
with 1 gig ram so I began to think it was at least possible. I'm not
going to say it will run faultlessly but if it at least installs and
runs to a degree that would be nice for the testing phase.

Thanks again Stew.

Welcome. I actually tried Vista RC2 on the 4550 with a gig of RAM and it was
ugly.

However, I'm thinking that the RTM version will run much more acceptably for
you.

Good luck.

Installed Vista on Dim 4500 - 2.8 Gig P4 533 FSB and 1 Gig RAM. Works well.

Me, too. Got it running under a thirty day trial to test it out with
some other software. I have Adobe CS3 on the way and I really need to
blow out my 9100. I'm trying to decide on whether to go with Vista
Business or XP Pro.

Choice, choices.

At one time during the Beta, I installed Beta 2 on an old XPSB1000R (1gigHz)
with 512meg ram.

It ran ok. Nothing to get excited about, but I was plesently suprised at how
it ran all things considered. No Aero of course.

I actually have one of those here also (XPS B1000 "special edition"), but I
didn't have the guts to try it. I was under the impression that this
particular model is fairly rare and I'm a bit surprised (due to the hardware
involved) that both yours and mine still run. g

Really? I ran RC2 on the same machine with no problems at all.

I don't doubt you one bit. That machine only had a 32mb or 64mb video card.
It was a 2.53/533mhz system.
