Default Cannot close any active window with X

HERE'S MY ISSUE:

I went away for about 2 weeks and when i returned my computer was
acting pretty funky.

- I can't close any opne windows with the X on the top right hand
corner.
- I can't resize or go to the menu. It won't even let me move the
windows.
- I go to the bottom tool bar and i can't right click to close the
window either.
- I CAN, however, press Alt+F4 to close any opme window but
- I can't resize with Alt+Space+X.

You can see that the buttons are being pressed but are unresponsive.
It is a strange issue and I cannot find anything on it through
groups.

HERE'S WHAT I'VE DONE:

- I thought maybe i might have some form of spyware/malware/wutever so
I scanned my box but found no problems ( i even updated all my
definitions and what not as to not miss anything)

- I uninstalled some updates and re-installed them thinking that maybe
something was corrupted during an install (that didn't help)

- I restored my box from the earliest restore point (that didn't work
either)

- I ran a defrag (wasted my time)

INTERESTING NOTES:

**I can run itunes normally, I can minimize maximize close, etc. That
seems to be the only one that works.

** I tried right clicking on my computer and going to "manage" but it
gives me an error "failed to create empty document" and there is no
"OK" in the button where "OK" should be.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate (32bit) and have been since
February with no issues other than the known ones. I'm stumped please
SOMEONE HELP!!!!

Does windows give you any error messages? Are you running as a limited user
under a network (Then your network admin disabled it)?

Have you tried a different mouse? Yeah, I'll admit it sounds dumb, but, hey,
if the mouse is giving you problems, try another one just to eliminate the
mouse as the source of the problem...

Good luck,

Hey guys,

to answer the 1st question I haven't recieved any errors when i log
onto my box and it's my primary computer from home so I am the admin.
I don't like to have a cluttered desktop and i also normally have all
startup programs disabled. I'm not sure if it is a memory issue, i
have enough memory to run ultimate and as I've said before, i've been
running it without problems since february.

As far as the mouse issue goes... I guess it doesn't hurt to try a
different mouse however, i have already switched the batteries and
what not on my wirelss mouse. I figured this issue was past the
physical layer and would be more on the logical link or application
layer... what do you think?

Well... I figure it's pretty easy to swap the mouse out... might want to try
a wired mouse, too. In terms of troubleshooting, I subscribe to the theory
of testing the low hanging fruit first, just to ensure that I don't spend
hours troubleshooting something I believe to be a software problem, only to
find out it's a hardware problem.

Again, not saying that's your problem... but swapping a mouse out is pretty
simple.

GuardianTai

You are not alone here. This has been going on for me for the last 2 weeks. Fortunately it is not happening all the time but on occasion. I am working on it (finding the problem)and hopefully I will have an answer for you very shortly.

Just answer me one question. Do you use Spybot S$D and when was the last time you used it and did you get a false positive about Microsoft Internet E Xplorer? If you did you have Spybot immunize it or have you deleted it.

I think that you should check memory usage on your PC anyway.
The error message "failed to create empty document" that you got reminds
me of my old Windows 98 system where this message showed up whenever the
system was too low on memory resources.

You could monitor memory usage with this gadget:

Ok so...

Lang - I tried a wired mouse and still no luck... I like that whole
theory of testing the low hanging fruit, though. Thanks for that.

Marco - I ran a Memory Diagnostic and everything came out alright.

Peter - I do have Spybot but I've never ran it... What's on your
mind?

One more thing and this is off the subject but, is it bad ettiquete to
post the same thing in other groups? I mean I haven't exactly gotten
responses from the other groups and well I'm glad I posted more than
once cause maybe if it was only posted in another group you woulda
missed it.... I'm just asking cause someone was just being rude on
another group and well, it just seemed like he was being a real A$
$hole for no reason. I really don't mean to offend if it's bad
ettiquette to do so. sorry
