I'm now looking at the desktop-replacement laptops (with 15" UXGA or
WUXGA screens) from IBM, Dell and Toshiba (the brands at the top of my
"short" list).
Two questions:
1) The durability and touch quality of the keyboard is important to me,
but it is difficult to conclusively assess before buying (especially
for IBM and Dell). So, what sayest everyone? Within each brand, do we
see a variance in keyboard quality?
2) For the screen, I'm intrigued with IBM (its "Flexview") and Dell
(its "Ultrasharp"). I recall hearing it mentioned somewhere that
Toshiba offers the "ClearView", but I've found no information on this
(marketing name may not be correct), and I see no mention at the
Toshiba USA site of anything "special" regarding their UXGA screen.
Thanks.

I've long been a toshiba user. I just made the switch to a t40p. The t40p
keyboard is good but I like the toshiba better.
Toshiba is:
Quieter (dead quiet)
Shorter strokes
Better layout (ctrl key in lower left)
Less bumbling the keys, hitting wrong ones.
IBM is very solid keyboard no flex etc. but I think toshiba is more user
friendly.

The IBM especially their T40 and A31p with the UXGA would be my
personal favorite. I do not know about the other brands but IBM even
in their value line of R40, the thinkpad's keyboard is unbeatable. For
UXGA screen, the Sony is best in these. But if you want a DTR laptop
that is close to being perfect, get the a31p while available.

Jon,
I currently have both a Toshiba SatPro 6000 (old) and a new Inspiron 5150
from Dell. The Toshiba is lighter and has more legacy ports (IR; Serial;
Parallel, etc.) but the keyboard on the Dell is definitely nicer for me.
Also, the build quality on the Dell seems a bit more "tank-like". maybe
because it's heavier, but it DOES feel sturdier. I have had NO problems with
the Toshiba over the year plus I've been using it and I really grew to like
it a lot. I bounced the cr*p out of it daily and it's never failed me. I
can't recall the last time the thing froze...it may be that it has not EVER!
(I know it sounds crazy, but it's true)
Since I've only had the Dell for a few days, time will tell. The Dell's 15"
UXGA screen is absolutely stunning! it's made by Sharp, and they definitely
have had the edge in LCD technology for a long time now (check out their
Aquos TV line). It took some tinkering to get the display as I liked but
well worth it. I was on a budget, so that ruled out the T40. I may have
bought that had price been no object but so far I'm happy with the 5150.
I did read many negative comments about the keyboards on the widescreen
Dell's (i8500 & 8600) which is why I got the 5150. So far, I'm happy with
the decision...talk to me in a year...
HTH...good shopping!

Did I ever say that the T40 has UXGA? I said the a31p with the UXGA.
Could you please re-read thoroughly before posting smart-*** comments.

If you want "FlexView" display on IBM machine then check carefuly. AFAIK no
current R and T models have it and the 15" non-FlexView display has quite
narrow viewing angle.

I think only A31 comes with Flexview(1400x1050) displays now.

Hi Morey,
Now that you've had your Dell UXGA 5150 for a few months, how do you feel
about it? What is the battery life, do you like the high viewing angle of
the UXGA screen, how much fan noise to you notice, does the chassis get hot
to the touch, etc., etc?
I do quite a bit of Photoshop work on my desktop, and would want to continue
such work on any laptop that I would purchase. I'm considering a loaded
Dell 5150 with its UXGA 1600x1200 display or a Sager NP5680 with the same
sort of display.
