I have a laptop that is running xp home and it is stopping at the "Windows is
Starting UP" screen. It is runing on A\C power and thanks to the last two
replies I received, I have got the thing started in safe mode. But how do I
fix what's wrong with it? Any ideas? I have no idea where to start.

See my post above, and when the dust from this problem settles, please help
your future newsgroup posting by using Outlook Express for newsgroup
activity. What you are using now is not good software for this purpose. You
will be amazed at the change. See this article and free yourself:

I have fixed problems in the past simply by booting in Safe Mode - followed
by booting in normal mode.

But while you are in Safe Mode you may want to run some combination of the
following:

(1) Scan for viruses
(2) Scan for Spyware
Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de
SpyBot Search & Destroy from
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10289035.html?tag=price
Both have free versions.
(3) Check for driver problems
Control Panel > Add Hardware > Next (button)
When dialog asks if you already connect the h/w, select YES and click NEXT
Double-click each device in the list to confirm it is working correctly.

If you still have problems, I would consider a Repair of XP. (Simply search
this newsgroup for Recovery Console - or the thread with subject
"User32.dll" posted yesterday. You will see the steps to repair XP. Or you
could 'Google' Repair Console.)

Good luck.

If T. Waters is suggesting System File Checker, I agree as it has fixed many
problems for me.

So hopefully you can get out of Safe Mode and boot in normal mode, as I
don't think you can run "SFC /SCANNOW" in Safe Mode.

A few ideas I didnt see mentioned already.

If the problem recently started you may be able to fix it easy. First off if
im not mistaken booting to safe mode does not update last known good
configuration. So power on or reboot your pc and hit the F8 key untill you
get the boot options menu. Select last known good configuration. This will
boot with the same setting that were used when you last were able to fully
boot into windows.

You could also goto help and support and run system restore. If it was
enabled you can go back to a previous restore point.

Also dont forget about MSCONFIG. Click start run and type MSCONFIG. Select
diagnostic startup. Then reboot and see if you can get into windows.

If you can then run MSCONFIG again and select "selective startup". Leave
check marks in just the system.ini and the win.ini options. Then reboot.

NOTE: At any point that the system does not boot after enabling something in
MSCONFIG then problem is most likely in the areas you just enabled. If you
noticed MSCONFIG has a tab for every area. If you goto these tabs you can
disable just part of certain areas instead of the entire thing at once. You
would however have to boot back into safe mode in order to make the changes.
Im sure you realized this though.

If the system comes up ok with the system.ini and win.ini enabled then you
are in fairly good shape. Next enable the system services and Reboot.

If it comes up ok then your problem is most likely a start up item. These
are the easiest to fix.

Once you find the area with the problem goto MSCONFIG again and select the
tab you need. leave half the items unchecked and check the other half. Hit
apply and then reboot. If the system comes up the problem is most likely in
the second half.

I think you can see where im going so Ill leave it at this. let me know if
you have questions for me.
