You spend $ 2,500 on a Toshiba Laptop and send your kid to college with it
He comes home and his hard drive burns out.The unit is 11 months old.
You go to Toshiba "Service Department"with your shiny TOSHIBA SATELLITE M30 model, now defunct.
They tell you" I know you've got warranty but our drives are back ordered and no ETA" I liked their term "no ETA"!!??
True meaning of this:"You're on your own, sucker"
You go to the first computer repair shop and they get you a drive from Toshiba , "dealing with a different department" they say.
Upon prodding the independent repair shop admits that they've seen this before: No warranty drives from Toshiba but plenty available as "new parts"
Of course , you pay for the new drive
You pay for the labour to put it in
You pay for the transportation and re-installation of all software, configuration disks, Windows XP. you name it and any college exam review data on the laptop
Either this or you let your kid flunk out
You are under time constraints
Next thing , you and your friends comb the net and find out that:
a) Toshiba lists your model as one of many with a defective factory installed hard drive
b)Toshiba never told you about point a)
c)Toshiba just settled a $ 2.1 billion US funds for selling"defective laptop computers in the US"
d)You punch in Toshiba Complaints, Toshiba sucks and the like and get hundreds of horror stories from duped consumers.
You tell Toshiba and they laugh at you!

The Registered Letter I sent to thePresident of the corporation in Japan brought no acknowledgement
These guys are totally amoral
They think they are OK
The website"thesqueakywheel.com" besides my story now has the one of the administrator of a large group of MEDICAL UNIVERSITY students who are getting skewered by Toshiba
An absolute horrorstory, totally unlike anything that one could consider"normal" poorservice and with which, alas, we all learned to cope with, to some extent
The only plausible explanation is that , once Toshiba settled their $2.1 BILLION class action lawsuit, they do not care anymore about some individual complaints, here and there.
It's like"why do we pay our corporate lawyers for? Go to Small Claims Court""

No replies whatsoever from Toshiba, so far
Posted story on most websites
Notified colleges and all forums
Opened dialogue on Consumer Sites
It is definitely doing plenty of damage AND IT WILL NOT STOP
Acquaintances and friends counted and my tally is about 45 laptop sales lost so far for Toshiba.
As usual, the damage is and continues to be exponential
I am betting on myself, in the end
We must recognize, however, that this is a uniquely evil company
After losing the $ 2.1 billion class action lawsuit in the US"for selling defective laptops" they appear not to care,as their reputation cannot be any lower.
There is, though, more pain in storefor them, and it is going to be of extended duration, until they budge
Keep in touch!

As a follow-up, one class action lawsuit just closed and another one is still accepting signatures.
The frightening thing is:"Who has the time and staying power for all this?"
TOSHIBA iscountingon some basic facts:
"People 's attention span is finite"
"People normally lick their wound and move on"
"People do not routinely do Internet searches before buying"
In this case, I feel that , despite the above there will be an impact.
Many ofthe horror stories are very well documented.
The lawsuits are real and so are the names.
Anybody witha bit of intellectual integrity can see Toshiba for what they are : A EXTREMELY VERY EVIL COMPUTER MAKING COMPANY THAT WILL DESTROY YOUR INVESTMENT IF YOU DO NOT GO SOMEWHERE ELSE WHEN IT COMES TIME TO PURCHASE YOUR LAPTOP NOTEBOOK COMPUTER.

Same experience with satellite M30x/60. you plug it in and the Battery was discharging even when it was plugged in.

The authorized center told me that they had 4000 of these in boston area and have it on backorder so "no ETA".

Customer service says they can't do anything about it.

As I write this my laptop is in for the third hard disk repair. The last one was 6 weeks ago. Not happy.

Also bought 3 year express depot warranty. Toshiba was to provide all overnight shipping and same day repair. Last time the repair took 12 days. Since then Toshiba has switched to two day shipping.

Never again.

I read your post and I thought I was living your life. The same exact thing happened to my daughter. She is on the phone now getting a box to ship it back to them for the 4th time to have her 4th harddrive installed. We purchased the extended warranty so we are really being tortured! It takes on average of 6 weeks to get her computer back. The last time we sent it on January 19, 2005 it only worked for 5 months. I don't know what recourse we have. She cannot afford to spend another $2000 on a computer for school. We are going to check into Small Claims Court. Although I don't know if this is a viable option.

You will be happy to know that Toshiba is being sued for this. I received an email this afternoon from the lawyers and I too have joined the lawsuit. I am in agreement that they are amoral and their employees have been trained to lie and deceive customers as well.

If anyone wants to join the lawsuit, you can join it at http://www.lieffcabraser.com/ look up Toshiba and send them a message and they will add you to the list.

I called Toshiba today and their customer service rep stated they were not making this good and that if it is under warranty they would fix it, if not I am on my own.

Boycott Toshiba and all of their products.

Has anyone here ever experienced problems with playing regular movies/videos (AVI, RMVB, MPEG-4)? My Satellite 1800 seems incapable of playing simple AVIs that my 250MHz IBM Thinkpad could play (that, however, is now gone). It seems to lag and stop at certain frames, then jump a couple of frames... essentially it isn't playing smoothly at all.

If so did you download any drivers that fixed the problem?

Thx for the help!

Hi, laughing
I'm from Argentina :?: . I bought a toshiba satellite pro 6100 and since then it's been a nightmare for me. (Un)fortunately I extended the warranty for 2 years. I use the computer for a year and a half not experiencing any problem at all. The first time I took it to the service I had to change the HDD (40 GB drive toshiba MK4025GAS - tons of problems with this model). 30 days to change a HDD!!! Before reading many reviews on the internet, I thought this could only happened in a third world country, but I now realize that this is global.
Now (two months after changing the HDD) the laptop is at the service again, (20 days and counting) due to "Ram failure" or something.
I was wondering if I can join myself to any lawsuit in the US.
Thanks for hearing.
Giving testimony it's a relief.

[Edited]

I deleted the name of the place where I bought the computer

Thanks to the publication of this post in your forum I received the deserved attention from the tech service where I bought the computer.

So I have to thank HowToFixComputers and Google for that. And I invite all TOSHIBA users to share your experiences in this forum so this information will be available to the public. Remember, Information is Power. Publishing changes things.

I also bought my a Toshiba laptop for college. After approximately 6 weeks of usage the hard drive died. Now I find out that it is not an uncommon problem. Prior to the laptop crashing, it took over 20 minutes to boot up. She called tech support 3 times for assistance. When I called Toshiba they were unwilling to exchange out defective laptop even though I explained that she was 3 hours away and does not have use of a laptop. She lost her 42 page paper that was due today and because of the fiasco did poorly on a math test.

I called the Toshiba, VP Custumer Relations, David Alberto , 949.583.3000x 6513 and someone named John X 4034(would not give last name) called me back. He said all they can do is have the unit go into the service center. I told him, I wanted an exchange because the write ins in the forums ssaid the repairs are taking a long time and does not neccessarily fix the problems. He even said my daughter should not have waited until the last minute to do her paper!

DO NOT BUY ANY TOSHIBA PRODUCTS!!!! If you research the web, their PDAs are also a problem. I will diligently help anyone get the word out on Toshiba products and their lack of responsibility to the consumer.

Hi big grin people,
I've been done a little research on the net. Here are some links with information about users of Toshiba being evil Satellite Pro 6100, most of them really angry with toshiba:

Average user rating 3.1 (Poor) - from 113 users
http://reviews.cnet.com/Toshiba_Satellite_Pro_6100_Pentium_4_M_512_MB/4852-3121_7-20761325.html?tag=uolst

I found also other interesting links about TOSHIBA SATELLITE PRO 6100 and other TOSHIBA models. Reliable information I guess since it's been gathered from different sources, most of the technicians:

Toshiba 6100 wont turn on
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/26393/?o=40

Other models quoted in the last post:

Tecra 8100
satellite pro 6000
satellite 5105

Toshiba Satellite Shutdown
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/23605/

Here there's list of the TOSHIBA models quoted on the last post which experienced the Shutdown Problem:

satellite 1410/2410
satellite pro 4600
satellite 1900-824
satellite 1905-S301
satellite 1955-S803
satellite 1905-S303
satellite A30-714
satellite A75-s206

I will use this space to start a campaign of conscientization of the average customer.
FIRST RULE: SEARCH THE MODEL OF THE NOTEBOOK YOU ARE BUYING ON THE INTERNET.

Many people on the net warn you about faulty products. We have to benefit ourselves from the experience of others

I encouraged you to copy and paste this in every forum you feel like
I also encouraged you to visit toshiba webpages and ask for further information on the net and in the different forums.

www.toshiba.com
www.toshibalatino.com
www.toshiba.es
www.toshiba.co.jp
www.toshiba.fr
www.toshiba.nl

Since I'm from Argentina I will be forced to write in Spanish. I believe there is not much information in Spanish about this so I hope English readers will understand.
