I have just purchased a Argosy - HD363N Network Storage Enclosure and
put in my Maxtor 200 gig drive.
This Enclosure connects to your router by RJ45 and allows adding
Network storage cheaply.
It supports Fat16, Fat32.
The problems I am having:
1) When the drive wakes up after being unsed for a while it does not
allways connect properly and needs to be restarted.
2) I copied all the files I needed to the drive and have just used
applications that READ only from the drive but do not write and now I
have files that are corrupted.
Is anyone using this Network Enclosure?
Are you having any of these problems?

Hey BobVal, I have one too and am not having any problems yet at all. I
have a couple of gigs of files on there, lots of pictures(they are
being indexed no problem by google's Picasa2) and I'm even serving
about 12 gigs of MP3s to my audiotron(the discovery of songs doesn't
work properly, but if you manually create a TOC it works fine).
I would tend to think that the waking up problem is probably DHCP
related. The device can act as HCP server and client I believe, so
check to see what you have enabled, or better yet just use static(that
is how I have mine).I am pretty sure this device uses smb to share
folders.
There is also a telnet server on the device. Use Putty if you are on
windows and use the same admin and password you configured through the
web interface to login. Quite a few commands available and you can
really configure the thing from the telnet line if you want to. Just
type help after you are logged in to get a complete command reference.
I love this device so far and am very interested in hacking around with
it, specifically understanding the OS. Here is a pic of the board in it
if you are interested(warning, pretty large picture)

| I have purchassed two of these units and am having the same issues with both. I have tried several different hard disk drives in them to see if perhaps it was a drive issue. Also when opening a file from the drive and then trying to save it back, it tells me that I can not save it back to the drive as there isa lready a file with that name and it can not be over written. Attempting to do backups to this deveice also gives me Windows write cache errors and stops the backup. |

Here is a good one for you, I cannot use WINXP-HOME with sp2 and all the latest updates with this device. When I try to create a new folder (right click add folder) in the shared directory (in Network Nieghborhood) the window hangs and says UNABLE TO CREATE "New Folder" THE FILE ALREADY EXISTS.
And all the files I did copy over are READ-ONLY.
The twist to all of this, is that the LINUX and MAC computers that are using SMB hae no problems at all!! _________________ Thanx a bunch!

Have been working with Argosy about the issue with the HD363N and have received a firmware upgrade that has fixed the problem. I have upgraded my firmware on all of my units and all are working fine.
If you are interested in the firmware I will gladly email it to you if you contact me: rick@cbaycomputers.com or rick@jarenterprises.com |

I too have a couple of these devices and see some wierd lockups on my main PC, and no issues on 2 others.
I also have some questions around the FTP server, as I cannot get that to work. More on that when I solve the lockup issue.
What backup software is supposed to come with this, as the the specs at pcmicrostore indiate it should have shipped with some.....
Rick, I have emailed you directly for the firmware file.
Regards
Mark

I have tried the new firmware, and tried to reformat the hard disk.
The reformat only took a few seconds, is this normal for a 250GB disk ?
I would expect a disk to be formatted in Fat32 to take much longer. The drive was not formatted before use in the HD363N. It was a new disk.
I look forward to any pointers.

Just a quick update, the firmware update has not solved my main server from hanging when trying to view files located in the public directory.
I have resolved my FTP issues, but my main issue remains, lock up on my main server when using windows explorer to browse at the file level detail.
This box is going back unless I can get it working with the main server !

I'm using the HD363N with a Mac (with two Macs to be precise) and I'm experiencing the same trouble as other posters. It can be a bit temperamental about mounting via SMB. But that's the least of the problems. When I do finally get it mounted, I can't seem to write to it or read from it. Usually, the drive will disconnect from the network while I'm writing to it. When I have managed to keep it connected long enough to copy a file over to it, the files are corrupted. And of course it won't let me delete them. I was hoping to be able to write to the same drive mounted in a firewire enclosure, then swap it into the HD363N, but it seems it will only read files from volumes it has created itself (which are not visible when I mount the drive in another enclosure).
I thought it might be a Mac-Windows networking issue, but reading this thread I'm thinking it's more likely to be the enclosure itself. I've had no trouble reading from and writing to other Windows drives from my Mac via SMB.
All in all, this has been a frustrating and expensive experience. The Argosy site itself is incredibly unhelpful. They don't even list this product, and the e-mail form on their support page doesn't work! Not exactly confidence-inspiring. |

The problems I reported appear to be limited to one PC, which is showing it's age and has ome other issues relating to USB2.
The storage has corrupted data once when coping aload of files. It does appear to go to sleep really quickly. I have 2 of these and they oth exhibit the same problems.
I am testing one with an old 6GB drive and a new 250GB 16MB cache unit, same issues with the drives, so my feeling is it is more likely firmware related.
Time to ping Argosy's support team I think. |

| I've installed the firmware update courtesy of rokitrik and it seems (so far) to have solved all my problems! One big thank you to rokitrik. So far so good - I can now install the drive in a firewire enclosure and copy over all my music and videos, swap it back into the network enclosure and it mounts from my wireless LAN without a problem. Streaming seems fine. The only question mark remaining is whether it will go to sleep on me - time will tell! |

I just received a new firmware upgrade for the Argosy HD363N from Argosy today. This is version 3-0311 and works very well. This version did not reset the config info and destroy the folder/file structure when installed as the last one did.
As so many have emailed me for the firmware upgrades I have now posted this file on my website. Please read the disclaimer below before downloading this file. My web site address is below the disclaimer and you agree by downloading this file that you have read and understand the disclaimer.
Disclaimer:
"I am in no way affiliated with or contracted by Argosy and can not be held liable or responsible for your data as a result of this upgrade. I have received this firmware upgrade directly from Argosy and have applied it to several of our HD363N drives without issue. This firmware upgrade may restore your HD363N to an out-of-box condition and destroy the file structure and any data residing on the device. You may have to re-format your drive using the Argosy format utility, configure the device, create your folder structure and restore any data when completed. I have not experienced this situation when I upgraded with this version, but you may. I did experience this issue with a previous version of firmware.
Backup your data and document your configuration prior to doing this upgrade.
I am passing this firmware upgrade to those who ask for it as a professional courtesy to aid others who are experiencing issues with the HD363N device from Argosy. HD363N is a product of Argosy USA."
If you do not know how to install the new firmware code you simply copy the .bin file to your PC. Log onto the HD363N and go to the MAINTENANCE tab and select BROWSE in the FIRMWARE UPLOAD section.
Please visit http://www.jarenterprises.com to download the latest firmware from our DOWNLOAD section.

Aaaargh! I confess, this device is driving me somewhat insane.
Thanks Rick, for the firmware update.
No matter what action I take with this device, the drive makes no noise. I'm trying to format now, and unfortunately the web servelet's only feedback is "opening page" in the status bar. No option for a quick format?
I'd have hoped these things would merely administer drives that are already formatted -- even with files and folders already on them. Does the device really require some proprietary setup of the machine when it formats it?
Also, can the device format disks regardless of whether there's already an NTFS partition on them? The documentation sure is scant! |
