I just received a spindle of 100 CD-Rs. No marking or accompanying
label. Darned if I can see any difference in appearance of each side!
So which side is the recordable one?
There are 3 small items of text, two on the inner edge of the medium:
'CD-R Multi-Speed' & 'a serial number
and the other on the transparent plastic right next to the hole.
If these two had both been orientated the same way, I'd have guessed
the side that I could read them would have been the upper,
non-recordable side. But they are not! They've apparently been printed
on different sides.

If they are "silver/silver", the top will tend to look more silver
than the pale tint of the underside.
The top normally has a groove around the hub, while the underside has
a ridge, though it could be absent on media described as "no stacking
rings".

burn one - if it works, take note of which words are "on top"
If it doesn't work, flip it over and try the burn again.
Also, usually a ridge around the center hub on the "bottom" (or side
that gets burned).

Thanks, that's what I did - and luckily chose correctly. And you're
right, there is indeed a ridge as you describe on the burning side.
