|
|
I'm currently running a PIII-1GHz with 512MB sdrams which I think is suffice
for my needs that including slight gaming only and mostly surfing.
Presently, I hesitating on my decision whether to upgrade my Creative GTS-2
32MB DDR gfx card to a direct x 9 compliant such as FX-5600ultra. The
problem lies with whether I ought to continue using my current setup which
is a PIII and stick with it but replace with the FX or stick with GTS-2 and
upgrade my PIII to P-4? I'm not able to upgrade them thoroghly as my budge
lie on either the gfx card or P-4 with motherboard & DDR sdram. Thank you.

Given that you've described your uses as "slight gaming" only, then I
would stick with the existing video card and upgrade the
processor/motherboard/memory. This upgrade will improve the
performance of nearly all applications that you make use of, while
upgrading the video card will only improve performance of gaming.
If you're a hard-code gamer, than the choice might be different,
especially given that a new video card is going to be quite a bit
cheaper than a new motherboard + processor + memory (and there's a
good chance that you'll need a new power supply for this upgrade as
well). Most games will still play just fine on a GeForce2 GTS. You
might need to reduce the resolution a tiny bit and put up with
slightly lower frame rates, so a hard-core gamer might find it
unacceptable, but then again, a hard-core gamer would probably also
find a 1GHz PIII unacceptable as well (you can't win! :> ).
