|
|
I built a pc five years ago. The mother board is PCChips M575S with the
Aladdin IV+ chipset from ALi, which supports UltraDMA 33. The BIOS is
AMI BIOS.
UtraDMA cannot be enabled on that system. And over the years I have not
been able to find out why , until today...
Viewing the .rom file of the AMI BIOS with AMIBCP, I notice that the
"PCI IDE BusMaster" option under PCI/PnP setup is disabled by default
and also set to "inactive", i.e., kept hidden from the user.
What on earth could be the reason for disabling the beloved bus
mastering in favor of the slower PIO, while the m/b manual still vouches
for support of Ultra DMA 33?
That pc may be garbage now, but the question lingers. |

Hello David,
we had that exact question a few days ago in this newsgroup. The
answer was that IDE busmastering does not work right on Ali4, at least
not in all cases. Data corruption, messed-up Windows (TM) registry.

Hi, Uli,
A reply to the same question of mine from a web forum says only the BIOS
itsself, at boot, cares about the "PCI IDE BusMaster" switch. Once the
OS sets in, its IDE driver takes over, ignoring that BIOS switch.
Anybody would like to make a comment on that?
P.S.: I don't dare to enable "PCI IDE BusMaster" before I can make sure
everything will be all right. Actually, I found a post back in 1996 in
which the author said that after he had enabled that switch, he
encountered a "non-system disk" error at boot.

No. Windows` default driver for the ALI4 chipset sticks to what the
BIOS has set. Else, you would probably have already

or a similar sign of data corruption.
