|
|
All,
My stepson has a computer based around a VIA KM-266 chipset
motherboard (Biostar M7VIG), that we're trying to upgrade the graphics on.
This is proving to be less easy than we hoped, since the FX 5200 card I
got for him refuses to install correctly (two separate cards report driver
issues, with both the drivers shipped with the card and the drivers
available direct from NVidia). Any suggestions for a card that should
work for him? The computer's currently running WinME.

Your primary problem IS the operating system he's using.
But did you first remove the drivers (control panel, remove programs),
then remove the video card (control panel, system, device manager)?
At that point, you shut down, physically remove the old card,
put in the new one, then reboot and install the new drivers.

Do you have the option to disable the integrated video in the BIOS Setup?
Did you remove the integrated video device from the Device Manager in WinME
and uninstall any video utilities from Add/Remove Programs? I've found
that with many video driver installs you have to remove all trace of the
previous drivers to get the new ones to take: from Safe Mode, delete all
the driver files and the .INF file from Windows\inf\other if it exists.

Yep, done.

Yep, done. However, when it rebooted after installing the new
drivers, it would get to the WinME splash screen, then the screen would go
black. It would sit there for an hour, with no hard drive activity. So
I'd reboot a couple more times and it would come up in safe mode.

Yep, we disabled the onboard video (by removing the shared memory,
that's the only switch there appears to be in either the BIOS or on the
board itself). Onboard video drivers were removed.

The black screen would possibly indicate the video card is trying to use a
video resolution/frequency which is not supported by the monitor. Does the
monitor show correctly in Safe Mode?

Yes, the monitor shows correctly in safe mode. Interestingly, the
card shows up in the Advanced Settings window without all the extra tabs
shown in the manual, it just shows up as Adapter (though the data there
seems correct).
