|
|
Hi
I have an U5 270MHz and the opportunity to aquire a 333MHz 2MB cache
processor pulled from another U5.
I read in the archives some debate about whether or not an OB update is
required to allow an upgrade or whether it just isn't possible.
Does anybody have a definitive answer?
Cheers

Thanks
Presumably the mainboard part number will be printed somewhere on the
board? Any pointers where roughly it is likely to be.
Cheers

I think it depends on what motherboard you have. Some only support 270. Others
support more. Check out

Depends on what OB you currently *have*.
I have two U5's, one with OB 3.15 and 300MHz, one with OB 3.25 and 400MHz.
Recently I got me a new 360MHz CPU module from ebay, and it will not
work in the OB 3.15 machine (RED errors), but it will work fine with
OB 3.25...
Dunno whether a table "for *this* CPU, you need a minimum OBP version
of *that*" exists anywhere...

Can't you just update the OBP?

"just" updating isn't so easy (need to figure out where to get the
software plus tools, without being clueful regarding Sun patch downloads).
But yes, it should be doable, and is certainly on my "things to do next"
list.

You need to move a jumper on the motherboard as well, or at least I've
had to on an Ultra 10 and an Ultra 2.
Chris
Its the same on the U5. I did mine recently. Quite straightforward |
though if you follow the patch instructions. |
