|
|
Hi -
I am a Cox Cable user in No Virginia. Because they filter poprt 25
now, I MUST use their SMTP server - smtp.east.cox.net.
As of yesterday, I noticed that all e-mails I send out that contain
the combination of the words "root" and "password" will just get
dropped silently.
Am I delirious, or has Cox undertaken the role of my Big Brother now
and knows better than I do what to send? I've had some serious
problems with customers not getting my e-mail as a consequence...
Can someone else also on the cox cable network try sending an e-mail
containing "root password" and see if it gets through?
Thanks!

I just tried about an hour ago. I sent two messages within a few minutes
of each other to the same non-Cox address. One contained the string "root
password" and did not get through (or hasn't, in close to an hour); the
other did not contain this string and arrived at the target mail server in
about 13 seconds. This was through smtp.east.cox.net, FWIW.
I agree that this is over the top, assuming it's deliberate and not a
weird coincidence; there are plenty of valid and even important reasons
to include the string "root password" in an e-mail, like "don't give the
root password to a stranger" or "be particularly careful in selecting
your root password." I can't help but wonder if Cox might have applied
some filters incorrectly, or applied an overly-broad filter for worms or
spam.
Thankfully, I can send mail via my domain hosting service's SMTP server
(using a non-standard port). Still, if Cox tightens the noose any more,
I'm going to have to start looking for a new ISP. Perhaps somebody other
than Verizon is offering DSL in my area by now....

That's what I ended up doing - bypassing their SMTP altogether using a
port other than 25. Too bad on my street Cox is the only broadband
game (short of a T1), I cannot get DSL (too far from CO).
Thanks for your reply!
