|
|
Hi,
I would be very grateful for any suggestions on this - as it's REALLY
p***ing me off now ! :-)
I have an Adaptec AHA2940UW Pro adapter with an IBM DNES-309170W 9Gb
drive on it. It's the only device on the chain. ID0.
The only way I can get Windows (XP SP1) to see the drive is to disable
the 'INIT WIDE' setting in the adapters BIOS for this ID. This is
limiting me to just half maximum performance.
The 2940UW Pro seems to be happy to talk to the drive with Wide
enabled, and has successfully formatted it this way (in the 2940's
bios). Indeed, the 2940 complains not one bit.... but Windows simply
refuses to see any device attached to the adapter unless I disable the
INIT WIDE setting.
I am correct in thinking my drive should support 40Mb transfers aren't
I ? - The info page is available here :-
http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/85256AB8006A31E587256A7600722F04//dnes_ps.PDF
It's a tiny PDF - 227k.
It's connected with a 68 pin cable, 1 metre length, with an active
terminator on the end (it makes no difference if I use the drive's
internal termination or the external active one).
PLEASE can someone put me out of my misery as soon as possible !! :-)
Many many thanks in advance,
Cheers,
Kev. |

Oh - in case it makes any difference, I'm not (yet) trying to boot off
the drive, and I have the 2940's SCSI BIOS disabled.
Cheers,
Kev. |

Then either the controller or the drive has a defective upper byte.
Might also be the cable.

Not really.
The Ultrastar 18ES is 19MB/s. Narrow will limit it to ~15MB/s.

All from the utilities menu is done on the command level, it doesn't
actually transfer data. Commands are transferred all narrow.

It wants to read the MBR, which fails when data is tranferred wide
and every 2nd byte fails.
No such problem when transferred narrow.

Busspeed, certainly.

Just to follow up - it turned out to be the cable. Instead of
connecting the drive and adapter with the full length of the cable, I
put them on adjacent connectors and bingo... all running at full
speed. :-) |
