What causes severe posterization problems on some negative
scans? Can't understand why I am getting it. Changing film type to
generic sometimes helps & long exposure pass also except for the
obvious time increase which is annoying when batch scanning. What
could be the reason?

Film Type Kodak 160NC.
Scanner = Coolscan 8000

Help greatly appreciated.

How does the histogram look? Does it smoothly cover the whole range from
dark to light, and no severe clipping at the ends? Do you work in 48/64 bit
mode?

It might help if you could post a link to an example crop.

Thanks for responding so promptly -

The histogram looks ok.

I wasn't working in 48/64 bit mode; but doing so makes no difference.
Image the same in Photoshop but printing relatively ok. Could this be
a monitor profile problem? I did calibrate my LCD monitor with
OptiCAL & set it as default monitor then directed Vuescan to it.

Correction!!! - the print (in the cold light of day) is most certainly
not ok - not sure how to post a link to an example crop.

What settings could I have got wrong that would cause this problem?
As mentioned this seems to be happening on all types of film. Have
tried resetting to default, etc.

Am perplexed!
