My Primary IDE interface on my 2460 mother board has suddenly become
non-functional. The problem occurred shortly after connecting a spare WD
HDD and restoring win2k backup files from a CD Rescue disk for use as a
redundant back-up drive.
My 'prior to backup' C drive, containing win2k & associated application
program files will not boot-up into windows when plugged into the Primary
socket but boots up normally when plugged into the Secondary socket. All
other functions on the mother board appear to be okay.
I would welcome any suggestions as to most likely source of this problem and
suggestions as to how best to pin-point the defective component.
TIA for any suggested trouble shooting procedures.

I should have provided more info re failure symptoms.
The boot-up sequence, while using the Primary IDE interface functions
normally up to the point where "Starting Windows" should be displayed across
the lower part of the Win2000 display. At this point, the screen remains
blank with only the cursor "flashing minus sign" being displayed in the
upper left corner of the display. All BIOS start-up sequences appear
normally up to the time when windows should be started.
I have two HDDs interfaced to the IDE connector --- one set as master with
win2k op system and all application programs installed and the 2nd drive set
as slave, containing only archival files.
At the time the failure apparently occurred, I disconnected the IDE ribbon
cable connected to the above noted master/slave HDDs from the IDE primary
connector, and replaced this with a another IDE ribbon cable having only the
spare HDD connected to it. At this time, I booted-up with my CD Resque
floppy disc installed preparatory to restoring my system back-up files to
the spare HDD connected to it. At this time I booted-up with my CD Resque
floppy disc installed preparatory to restoring my system back-up files to
the spare HDD
The CD-Resque restoration proceedure was done without apparent problems ---
although I elected not to attempt to verify system power-up using the newly
backed up drive. Instead, I plugged in my prior main C drive master & slave
drive combination using the Primary IDE interface. This is when I noted
first indications of the problem.
I also have a Promise Ultra 100 Controller installed in my system. It's
functioning normally, as is the rest of my system at this time with my C
drive now plugged in to the Secondary IDE connector.
My appoligies for the lengthy post but, hopefully, this additional info may
provide a clue as to the source of my problem.

Are you sure the new cable is an 80 pin and not 40 pin cable. They look the
same but the difference is the 80 pin has a ground for each separate line.

The cable used when I did the CD Resq restore to my spare HDD was indeed a
40 pin cable.
However, it was only used during the restoration procedure..
The cable in use now while using the Secondary IDE interface is an 80 pin
cable. When attempting to boot-up using the Primary IDE, and using the same
80 pin cable pin cable, the boot-up process stalls out at the point windows
is supposed to begin its start-up routine.
The device manager in Systems/Control Panel indicates the primary IDE is
normal --- also no exclamation mark is displayed.

I can only assume the drive is okay, since my system (win2k) boots up
normally when the drive is connected to the Secondary IDE socket.
Subsequent to my original posting, I have removed, and after a ten minted
delay, reinstalled the mother board battery. Now with the drive connected
to the Primary IDE socket, I get the message "No Operating System Found" at
the end of the BIOS routine.
I'm continuing to use the Secondary socket interface as a temporary
expedient. I'm still waiting to hear back from Tyan Tech Support ---- no
response from them yet.

With e-mail assistance from Tyan Tech Support, my problem has now been
corrected. The problem was apparently the result of corruption in my C
drive MBR.
The problem was solved by again restoring my most recent CD Rescue back-up
files to an 8.4 gig spare drive with it connected to the Primary IDE ----
followed by an immediate boot-up to that drive using the same IDE
connection.
The re-boot proceeded normally and I now have my full system back in
operation ---- and no need to worry about an RMA of my 2460!
I still don't understand why I previously could boot-up into win2k via the
Secondary IDE --- but not via the Primary interface.
As a matter of interest, my 2460 has been in daily operation since its
initial turn-up in October of 2001 ---- still without a single mother board
related hardware problem.
Not a bad record, considering all of the adverse posts re this MB that have
appeared over the past couple of years
