Thanks for taking the time, Adam. I think that this will work. I'll give
it a try.

my Zen and it seems to be working fine. However, I had tried to
upgrade Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 and during the
installation of devices the system kept crashing to a BSOD. The error
said "The driver is mismanaging system PTEs". I figured that this had
something to do with the Windows 2000 ATI drivers that were installed
for the video adapter. After sever failed attempts to resolve the
problem, I trashed the upgrade and ran a fresh install of Windows 2003
and the install was successful. I did install the XP audio and the SM
Bus drivers included on the Shuttle CD. But let Windows install the
LAN and video drivers. Hope that helps.

I'm trying to setup a server for 2 in a home closet, and the 180Watt,
quiet,
Shuttle Zen is looking very attractive. But can the Windows 2000 ATI
9100
IGP drivers on the Shuttle site (for lan, video, audio, usb 2.0)
actually
work with Windows 2003.
Has anyone tried either a clean install of Windows 2003 and loaded these
driver, or a Windows 2000 install and a upgrade to 2003?
I think I can live without the audio, but all else seems fairly
essential
for our work.
Thanks in advance for any experience shared. BTW: I have the same

I had same problem with running dual-channel DDR400 (Corsair CMX512) ram on
my ST61. Got booted and everything from time to time, when not a bluescreen.
The problem was solved when I clocked the ram as DDR 333. Then the problem
was gone totally. Try download a program as Quicktech, to test if the ram is
going down to a compatiblity issue.

| Quote: | I had a similar problem and found the same solution on the web. However, I
now have an intermittent problem whereby I get the blue screen of death at
random points (usually when browsing the web). My ST61 also starts itself
unexpectedly! There are a hundred reasons why this might be the case but
I'm
trying to eliminate every angle.
Do you get "drive not found" when the SATARAID screen pops up just prior
to
XP loading? Also, my Seagate is listed as a SCSI device by XP which seems
strange.
My guess is that I have an overheat problem, possibly caused by my new
radeon 9600 graphics card (it has a heatsink instead of a fan). So if my
problem isn't the hard drive, then I'm going to swap the graphics card.
I'm
loathed to fiddle with the CPU temperature settings in the BIOS.
Next will be the memtest.
Having said all this, I've not had a blue screen today... must be the cold
weather!

Thanks.
I worked out how to do it. My solution, for the benefit of others, is
as
follows:
1. Because the ST61G4 has no floppy, I borrowed a floppy drive from a
old
PC
and temporarily installed it. This is necessary in order to load the
SATA
drivers while Windows XP is booting. Needless to say, you have to have
the
case open. If any one knows how else to do it, please tell!
2. Edit the BIOS as follows:
a. Integrated Peripherals:
- Enable "Silicon Image Raid" (This is necessary for SATA disk)
- Enable "Onboard FDC Controller"
- Disabled "USB EHCI" and "Onchip USB KBC Controller". This I found
necessary if you wanted to ensure that Windows XP was installed on a
C-drive. If not, my first attempt resulted in a F-drive.
b. Standard CMOS Features
- Drive A: set to 1.4 Mb floppy
c. IDE Adapters
- Ensure that "First Boot Device" is set to CD
F10 to save BIOS and exit
3. With Windows HP Home in CD and floppy in A-drive with SATA drivers,
reboot system
4. As Windows XP inspects system and starts loading drivers, watch for
F6
message to load other drivers. Press and hold F6 function key. You
will
eventually get to a screen were it invites you to press "S" to load
other
drivers. Select appropriate driver and continue to load Windows XP in
normal manor.
5. When your logged into Windows XP, create any other disk partitions
(with
appropriately assigned drive letters).
6. Shut down PC
7. Remove Floppy disk drive and replace case
8. Restart PC and enter BIOS. Disable Floppy disk controller and
re-enable
USB. Save and reboot.
I hope the above helps. If anyone knows how to do the above with
temporarily fitting a floppy, I would love to know. I would also
suggest
that the documentation with Shuttle could be a lot more comprehensive
(also
their web site).

Just to save some other poor soul from going through the same pain

machine booted up no problem, and has been purring like a satisfied

I bought a SS51G Shuttle XPC from NewEgg, as well as an Intel P4 2.40A
GHz CPU, and Transcend 512MB DDR333 PC2700 RAM. I added a 80GB Maxtor
HDD, a floppy drive and a LiteOn CDR. I built the darn thing, and
could not get it to POST. No video, no beeps, nothing. Couldn't even
turn it off unless I unplugged it. I sent the components back to
NewEgg figuring one of them was bad. The replacement components do
exactly the same. ARGH!
I unplugged the components one by one, and tried to get the mainboard
to POST. No joy.
I cleared the CMOS, no joy.
I bought a 512MB PC2700 DDR333 from Kingston (which is supposed to be
fully tested in this box). No joy.
I am at the end of my rope. Is there something else going on that I
can do to resuscitate this machine?

As these boxes are sold sans CPU and OS it would be nice if there was a
hardware and software compatibility list. I recently wasted too many
hours trying to get Win2K Pro running on one and eventually gave up and
loaded XP instead. I was hoping to run it as a Win2K server but have
decided to have a go with a dodgy copy of 2003 server instead.
Has anybody managed to get this combination working? |

2.4 "A" is not a Prescott.... 2.4 "E" is.
A's were 400Mhz fsb, iirc. E's are 800Mhz, and the SS51's chipset falls way
short of this (533mhz as a rated, tested speed)

Hi Folks
I'm back in action again now that I have a new Bios (Thanks to

updated the bios in the first place. The AK31 V2.0 can take up a 2100+

2800+, would it still be recognised and run at the 1.73 Ghz of a
2100+. I am just trying to see if I am better planning on a future
mobo upgrade. Has anyone tried the faster CPUs in the AK31?
Thanks

I assume if it's the same board that you've replaced the battery.
I also assume you have had the ps unplugged for 10 or 20 seconds.
I also assume you've checked the voltage from the PS at the 20 pin header
with a digital meter.
You could also try a different PS.
You could try a different cpu.
You could try different ram.
Hope some of this helps... my an35n has been great to me for a year.
