I've got an old PA-2013 which isn't too slow in shutting down. Takes 5 secs.
Yet, I have a P II 400Mhz at work with a Deskstar IBM hard drive that shuts
down in 1.5 secs. Also, when I do a find files, the window pops up almost
instantly as opposed to 1 sec of the former. Is it the hard drive which is
making the difference here and there is something unique about the IBM
Deskstars just being far superior even to my Maxtor?

It is hard to say for sure, as there are several factors involved -- the
physical speed of the hard drive, the size of the hard drive's memory cache, and
the drive's firmware all have a part to play. The operating system also comes
into play, as it tries to shut down processes that are resident in memory and
flushes the hard drive buffer before turning off.
