Hi all, I just purchased a western digital 160gb hard drive to put in my
system. After hooking the plumbing up, I turned on my machine and after only
3-5 seconds, the computer immediately shuts down. Repeatedly pressing the
power button will not turn it back on. Only after turning off the pwr bar,
waiting a minute or so and then turning the computer back on again, will the
computer start up. But again, after 3-5 secs, the computer shuts down. Ok, I
thought, maybe the new drive's defective. So I plugged the drive into two
other computers and the drive worked fine. So I tried plugging it back in,
but this time, I disconnected all the other drives (cables and pwr
connectors) and only plugged in a pwr connector to the new drive. My goal at
this point is just to get the computer to start and stay on so I can get
into the cmos. Again, the same thing happens - the computer will only pwr up
for 3-5 secs before shutting down. I tried different pwr connectors. Same
thing. So I plugged in the old hard drive and the computer boots up no
problem. As I said, the new hard drive works fine in two other machines -
one of which is much older than mine (I define working as the computer
recognizes that there is a drive and doesn't shut down like mine does). I am
at a loss on what to do next. Anyone have any ideas???
p.s. if I haven't provided enough detail (i.e. technical specs) to make a
diagnosis, let me know.

Sounds like a maybe a power supply issue? I'd recommend you try one of the
power supplies from the 'other' machines in your system to see if it will
boot up. Perhaps with your old hard drive it was marginally acceptable, but
the newer drive may require more power to spin up and subsequently shuts the
mobo down as a result. Troubleshoot with bare minimum components
(cpu/video/ram) only. Do you have the bios set to automatically detect the
drive on the IDE channel? Also, do you have a mobo bios revision level that
is known to support 160gb drives? Just a thought.
On a last ditch effort..... I have a case that occasionally had the power
supply getting stuck when it is pressed. This results in a shutdown shortly
thereafter (about 3 seconds). Might be worth checking for a sticking power
switch. Unlikely, but possible. |

Additionally, I saw a strange case like the OP on an Abit (spit!) IC7
where
the machine wouldn't stay up if powering a Zip drive. Like this one it
would
run for just a few secs and shut down again.
It turned out to be the CPU Fan had a controller on it and in the start
phase
it hadn't achieved the BIOS minimum RPMs and so the BIOS assumed the
fan had dropped off and shut the system down!

Sorry for the late reply. But you're right. The psu is defective. I had to
buy a new one and it solved the problem.
Thanks for the feedback.

Glad to hear you may have solved the problem.
Hope it works out for you.
Its great that you let the group know your results.
