I've been fighting this thing since I bought it and the CPU
at FRY's a week back. Windows installs up to the final
reboot, then on that reboot I get a "Windows Protection
Error, You must restart your computer". When I restart I
just get the same thing again.
I have tried both Win95 and Win98, exact same result with
both.
I also tried Mandrake Linux, that installed fine, so it
would seem the hardware is not broke!
I am going nuts trying to get this thing working, please
post if you can solve this mystery (or misery).

What type of hardware do you have? Particularly the RAM.

The RAM is Kingston, two 256M sticks, PC2100. One 13GB HDD as
primary master, and DVD-RW as secondary master. Since you mentioned
memory, I looked in the BIOS and could not find any way to set the
RAM speed to 100, 133 looked like the lowest setting. Mobo is
supposed to support both 400 and 533 CPU speeds so 100 should be an
option somewhere if I could find it. |

It would seem like your RAM would be OK, but I think I would try it |
with one stick and then the other just to see if it had an impact. From
my limited knowledge, I believe that "Windows Protection
Errors" are what occurs when Windows is attempting to write to a
location that is supposed to already be occupied. My experience has
proved this to be due to bad RAM in most cases.
The other thing I would try to do is what you suggested: Try to slow
down either the RAM, processor, or both. Slowing down the FSB might
indict the RAM if it worked after having done so. |

And interesting update. I borrowed a copy of XP from someone to see what
happens, and it installs and runs fine. Since that and Linux both install fine
it seems to say the hardware is all OK. I also ran across a post in another
newsgroup that basically stated that Win98 NDIS failures were a know bug with
CPU's above 2.1GHz. There was a patch available, and I now have that patch, but
I have not found out how to install the patch yet! If that does solve the
problem I will report it to the NG. In the mean time, anyone out there with this
mobo, and 2.8GHz P4 have any luck installing Win98 from scratch?

I wish I would have seen this when I researched motherboards I was buying on eBay.
I just got this a few months ago, and it's been giving me pain when I wanted to install Win98SE. I don't have any open valid licenses for the Windows XP CDs I got from a beta tester friend (he said the product key he had for was used up- can't be used any more due to the licensing restrictions)
So I am stuck installing a form of Linux on this unit. I'll try Lindows, a Linuyx variant with Windows emulation built in.
Ugh... I hope I have better luck with the Intel mobo. |
