I am the delighted owner of the awesome Yamaha CRW3200 CD-RW drive which
uses the fantastic Audio Master Quality Recording System to make superb
audio CD burns. I am desperate to get this running on my system.

Here are the details:

Macintosh G4-newer version with single 1.4 GHz processor, internal ATA,
external USB connections.

Yamaha CRW3200 CD-R internal ATA drive in an external converter box
which connects with USB. The sole reason for this setup is because the
oval-shaped bay doors over the CD drives catches on the tray on my
Yamaha much much to my annoyance. Elegant design = utilitarian flaw. For
whatever reason, the Yamaha tray is a little too big to fit out the
opening.

I have the Yamaha connected through USB and my Mac profilers sees and
names it properly, but when I put a disc into the drive, it is not read
into the system and never shows up on the desktop, just stops spinning
after a few seconds. Booting up Toast, the drive is not even seen on the
list of drives avaiable at all.

I can't for the life of me find information on how to get this drive
running on my Mac. Do I need a driver or something? One does not appear
to exist. But I have seen that people have had G4's set up with this
drive in operation so it must be feasible.

PLEASE PLEASE help! I am at a dead standstill on this one. Please also
do me a huge favor and email me your response as well as post it. I am
at sparky.seven(at)verizon.net

Hugest thanks to the wise and kindly soul who can help me resolve this.

There's an easy solution to that. The front nameplate on the CD tray can
be removed, after which the tray is narrow enough to easily fit through
the oval. It's not hard to do. The tray front is only held in place by a
couple of plastic tabs.

If you have a factory-installed optical drive, eject it and look at it.
You'll see that the disc tray doesn't have the front nameplate on it.

You need to find MAC drivers for the USB converter, that should make it

work.

Doug,

I'll bet that the people you havee seen with G4s setup with this drive
in operation had installed the drive in a Firewire enclosure. Firewire
devices normally do not require a driver. I slapped a 2.3GB Fujitsu
IDE Magneto/Optical Drive into a Granite Digital Firewire enclosure.
The thing has simply worked wonderfully since day one.

Same thing happened when I purchased a LaCie CD-RW 52x24x52
Firewire drive. All I did was plug it in to my QuickSilver 867Mhz
single CPU, 1.5GB RAM, 580GB HDD system. And the LaCie drive has
worked great also.

In my experience, many USB drive devices require drivers written for
the specific OS in question. As a quick, single example, the Fujitsu
2.3GB Magneto/Optical external USB drive only comes with Windoze
drivers, it is totally incompatible with any Macintosh.

I hope the other advice I noticed that you received allows you to mount
the drive internally. If that is not possible, get yourself a good
Firewire enclosure with a built-in power supply (I like Granite Digital
for the quality of the product, but I will warn you that they are
expensive), set any jumpers required on the Yamaha ATA connection,
connect to the IDE & Power supply cables, screw-it into the case & you
are done. A total of about 15 mintues work if you buy a case the proper
size. HTH.
