|
|
Hi everyone,
Im' looking for a BIOS downgrade OR a hack for an intel mainboard, sold by
gateway. The BIOS identification string (displayed on startup) is
4R4CB0XA.15A.
I used to have bios version 4
(ID string 4R4CB0XA.15A.0014.P04.9810021408), which worked acceptable with
a Pentium III/550 MHz processor under Linux. Then I upgraded to the latest
BIOS version(4R4CB0XA.15A.0018.P08.9903051113).
Bad idea!
On startup the BIOS now says something along the lines "This system does
not support pentium III processors above 400 MHz. The system is halted."
I was lucky to have a Pentium II/350 at hand or I'd have rendered my
system useless.
Looks like the marketing boys had a bit too much say in the creation of
the latest BIOS version.
I've been searching the net for downloads of older BIOS versions, but I've
come up empty handed so far. Besides that, I don't know the file name for
the packed bios file. The latest had the file name 7505722.exe. Or,
alternately, if any one of you knows how to bypass the BIOS test for the
processor I'm all ears.
Best regards,
NoKey. |

The best you can hope for is that someone has saved a copy of the P04 BIOS,
which you can obtain and use to downgrade the BIOS. As far as I know Intel does
not have older versions of this BIOS on-line, nor does Gateway.
The RC440BX is an older 440BX chipset board, like the original SE440BX. If you
upgrade the BIOS on either one, the BIOS grinds to a halt when a faster P3 is
installed. If you do not upgrade the BIOS, then the motherboard BIOS
mis-reports the processor speed and/or the processor type.
Intel would probably claim that the higher wattage drawn by the faster
processors is outside the design limits of the motherboard. Yet if you examine
the SE440BX-2 and compare it to the SE440BX, you will find no visible difference
in integrated circuits on the boards except that the SE440BX-2 has a smallish
aluminum heat sink attached to the main 440BX chip.
I envountered exactly the same problem recently with an Intel-made motherboard
in a Dell system... Ben Myers

I have the complete manual (.pdf file)that came with my micron p-3

setup. I can send you the whole file, if you think it will help. |

Go to http://support.buympc.com/apps/filelist.asp?ID=3152 This site
will give you a bootable disc to restart the machine with. It has the
P-15 bios revision. The instructions are in a readme file on this
disc. After you update the bios, restart and press f2 (to get to
setup) and restore defaults. This bios should work on processors up
to 850Mhz (according to Intel)

| I too am looking for a 'downgrade' for my Gateway G6-350 Mobo. It has the P08 bios installed, and won't take the 1.4Ghz Tualatin Celeron (& Slot-T adapter from Upgradeware.com). I suspect it will work with an older bios as I have seen this on several other computers. I've also seen a 'P14' bios that Intel offers for my RC440BX chipset, but am afraid to try it. Does ANYONE know how to find the older 'P04' bios that 'NoKey' referred to??? Thanks, Steinweb |

I successfully installed the 1.4C with a Slotwonder using
4W4SBOXO.15A.0013.P14 on a GP7-450.
All the best,

hey the same problem exists with the dell v-series board. It is an AR440BX board (aruba). I had a A04 bios on it with no problem; thought I would be smart and upgrade to a A08. Bad idea, and dell's flash updater doesn't let you save a backup copy of the bios (at least, by default).
I have not been able to find an A04 bios at all on the net. I'm sure if someone with an A04 bios and the full flashing program could save the existing bios to disk and post it for me/us (I've seen other ppl post with the same question on other boards).
Meanwhile, I have a Gateway P6-350 with the same problem. I had already flashed the bios on it, although since it's -not- an OEM-only board (made by Intel for Dell, not sold in retail), I was hoping I could get the older bios easier, mabye from Gateway's ftp site. It is a 4R4CB0XA.xxx
By the way, if you can get an older Intel bios with the .86A identifier, it's easy with a hex editor to modify the bios to work on the Gateway board. Change the .86A to .10A. |

"without a .exe file"???? Does this mean only the raw BIOS image? Or do you
want the BIOS files already unpacked from the EXE file in which they came? This
will be difficult, either way. Gateway does not make the WS440BX motherboard
files especially visible any more, and there does not seem to be a BIOS to be
downloaded from the Intel web site.
Please explain the problem you need to solve... Ben Myers
