When I burn a CD on my Mitsumi CR-48XGTE burner with Nero Express, I get
inconsistent quality of burns based on visual inspection of the media
post-burn. The lighter looking burns will not be read correctly by the
Mitsumi burner when I try to do an install of the newly-burned program. ( I
get an error about a corrupt CAB file). My read-only CD-ROM has no problem
with any of the discs burned by the Mitsumi, so it looks like a borderline
thing. I tried cleaning with compressed air (Freon?) with no change. I tried
different brands of media with no change noted. When I get a good burn, it
is easy to spot visually, but it is inconsistent and unpredictable I
estimate about 75% of my burns are too "light" to be read by the Mitsumi.
Doesn't seem to have anything to do with timing or duty cycle. Any
suggestions?

Maybe buffer underrun protection kicking in? Tried slower burn speed?

Check the burn with [CDSpeed, ScanDisc].

Already have it turned down to 16X. All the data is there - the burn is
nearly invisible and only able to be read by certain CD-ROM drives.

Maybe gingerly clean the laser if the drive is out of warranty?

(Check the nearly invisible cd with CDSpeed, ScanDisc in the burner and
CD-ROM.)

The same media at the same burn speed would give inconsistent
results? I'm no expert on any of this stuff, but it sounds like a
media/burner mismatch to me. I'd recommend trying a firmware upgrade...
but I don't even see your drive listed at the Mitsumi site. Maybe try
some media listed at http://www.mitsumi.com/enduser/media1.html ?
