In the last 24 hours, my AMD powered (t-bird 1.2) has blacked out 4 times
under stress. I suspect the power supply is going because the system is
totaly black, no power. I wait 20 minutes and it will start up again.
Since this happens only under stress (quake3, 3Dmk2001se, deep system
scan),I'm wondering if it could be the CPU, which is why I asked in this
forum.

TIA, TonyK

If you can use a tool like MBM5 to monitor and log voltages and temperatures
(my FAQ in my sig links directly to some MBM5 info), that might give us a
better idea of whats going on.

It may also be useful to know your motherboard/chipset and more info about
your PSU, as well as how many drives you have.

Mobo or PSU..
Check the caps on the mobo (esp if it's a msi) and make sure none are
weird looking, bulges or leaking (brownish areas around the base). If
it's just "Black" then I would doubt it's the psu but dont rule it out..

Abit suffered from this problem too. The BE6-II era, IIRC.

Check....
Case & PSU fans
CPU heatsink is clear of heavy dust
CPU heatsink is attached firmly
CPU fan spins at a rapid rate/blowing sufficient air

Voltages, check with meter or run a monitoring program like Motherboard
Monitor 5 (MBM5) and let it create a log to help identify the problem.

IME failures are most common in this order,
Overheating hardware: CPU, Video card, etc,etc
PSU Bad/Underpowered/Unsteady voltages
Bad stick of RAM
Motherboard failure (Capacitors blown/leaking)
CPU damaged (Very rare)

It was 2 years of dust, crud, dog hair......I blew out the power supply
with canned air and I can't crash the system at all. Also, after the
crashes, the PS case was very hot, after the cleaning, almost cool to the
touch after running heavy stuff. Thanks for all the good posts.
