|
Something is wrong with my CPU speed.
ABIT AT7 MAX2
AMD Athon XP 2600+ Barton 333FSB L2=512K, AXDA2600KV4D
512MB PC3200 400 MHz DDR, single module
I ran Sisoft Sandra and it reports my CPU running at 1.15GHz, but my BIOS
Setup settings say CPU Operating Speed = 3000+ (333)
CPU FSB = 166
Ratio (FSB:AGP:PCI) = 5:2:1
Mltiplier Factor = X13
According to the BIOS Setup, I should be runing at 2158 GHz.
Also Sandra reports my memory at PC2100, not PC3200.
WHY??
Should theBIOS be upgraded?
Am I reading Sisoft Sandra wrong?
Exact report in Sisoft Sandra are:
CPU BIOS Info = 1.15 GHz
Model Number = 1424 (estimated)
Performance Rating = PR1666 (estimated)
Multiplier = 23/2X
Generation = G7
Name = Duron M/O & athlon MP/XP (Barton/Thorton) 1.8GHz
Revision/Stepping A/0 (0)
Stepping Mask A2
Thanks for any suggestions,
Gene |

Ram may be too fast for this athlon.
CPU FSB = 333? Ram speed is 400 MHz. The Fsb may be to low to run this
ram in full. So Your AMD Athon XP 2600+ Barton might be clocking it's
self down + bringing down the ram speed as well.
If your fsb is 533 or higher, you can use 400 MHz ram without a problem.
Heh? Oops, 400 MHz Fsb is enough to do it. The 3200+ I think
supports it. Reason I say I think, is I'm a Intel Man.
I gots to have my Intel Systems, like the one I wrote this on is an
Intel.
Slot a 850 MHz Athlon.

Errrr....The AT7 Max2 supports asynchronous FSB/DRAM clock speeds...That is,
it is quite happy to run FSB at 166MHz (333DDR) and memory at 200MHz
(400DDR).
That board does not however support 200MHz FSB...so the XP3200+ you advised
would not be suitable for that board. |

333FSB is a chip spec of the Barton 2600+. Also the AT7 Max 2 board specs
say that 333/400 DDR memory is compatible. I guess being compatible does
not mean it will run to its full potential, only that it will work. Memory
is running at 200MHz according to the BIOS.
I stated the BIOS settings to be:
CPU FSB = 166
Ratio (FSB:AGP:PCI) = 5:2:1
Mltiplier Factor = X13
I think maybe the Sisoft report of Multiplier = 23/2X might mean the CPU
BIOS Info = 1.15 GHz is doubled, which would mean it is running true to BIOS
settings. I could be wrong.
Sisoft report:
CPU BIOS Info = 1.15 GHz
Model Number = 1424 (estimated)
Performance Rating = PR1666 (estimated)
Multiplier = 23/2X

You are correct in that this system is running FSB at 166MHz (333DDR) and
memory at 200MHz (400DDR).
As I replied to BigBadger, I think maybe the Sisoft report of Multiplier =
23/2X might mean the CPU BIOS Info = 1.15 GHz is doubled.
I wish I could find a way to lock down the AGP/PCI bus speeds, so that I
could bump up the CPU FSB. The way it is now is if I increase the CPU FSB,
the AGP/PCI bus speeds become intolerate.
Thanks for your thoughts,

I think the 13x multiplier may be to blame...The default multiplier on the
XP2600+ is 11.5.
Your board does not support '5th bit' multiplier control...so the most you
can set the multi at would be 12.5. Selecting 13x would actually give you a
much lower multiplier which could explain the low clock speed reported in
Sandra. Try setting the multiplier to 12x or 12.5x and see what you get.
Also as the previous poster advised; Sandra is full of bugs so try something
like WCPUID or CPUZ.

I had the multiplier running at x12.5 at one point and the system seemed to
fly on bootup & everything else. Tried x13--didn't work. Updated BIOS and
have not been able to get it to run at x12.5 since. Will run x12. Should
have left well enough alone insead of pushing...but is that not the
point--to see how far we can push a system. Will try WCPUID.
Thanks BigBadger,

I have your mb at7max 2. Notice its particular with the multiplier setting.
have xp1800 and it doesn't like changing that multiplier...bad boots,
etc...,,Its been running a year or so...
The nf7-s might replace it. I got one built and running...boots
quicker/winxp....lots of settings to fiddle with.
Considering An7 for replacement too...xp2600 barton, 512cache...
my 2 cents
