I'm starting to get ideas about what I can afford and need to set up a
fairly good gaming computer without having to buy new hard drives. I have
one 80 and one 40gb, both 7200 western digitals. My question is this:
Would I notice a really big difference in my game playing if I set up a new
computer with sata/raid connections versus the normal eide master/slave
setup. I do know that on xp you would use cable select. I am leaning
toward the asus mb, 3.0 ghtz, 800 fsb, with 1 gig ddr400 3200 ram. I want
to use my two hard drives if possible and need ideas about is the extra
money the mb's cost that come with the sata/raid connection worth it.
Thanks

Hi,
From what I've read you won't notice any discerning difference in
speed.Where I have read a quite obvious difference is when going to a 10,000
rpm drive. The bragging starts flying at that point. I believe the popular
36 gig SATA WD is a key item in this area.
Western Digital 36.7GB 10,000RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model WD360GD

In most games you'll notice a difference in load speed with faster drives
but as long as you've plenty of memory and don't need to page a lot of stuff
play speeds shouldn't be noticeably different.

Well then, that rules out SATA then, which requires new drives to get
some gain from SATA, if your SATA interface does not hang off the PCI
bus. I don't think you can do a striped RAID (which would be the
faster one), with dissimilar drives, so I think you are stuck with a
normal ATA100/133 system. |

Thanks the responses and different opinions. What I am getting from the
different people is that I won't notice a big difference in actual game
play, but I will notice a difference in the loading of the game or other
software. I will have to think about if the added expense for the sata
drives and setup would be worth saving a few seconds. I don't use my
computer to run large programs only web browsing, and playing some games
such as Halflife and medal of honor.
Thanks for the suggestions.
