Hello group,

I gave my mother a Dell c-510 laptop but my brother got on it and now
it may be dead......or maybe not. If anyone can help me diognose this
problem it would be greatly appreciated.

When I try boot up the laptop I get the "We apologize for the
inconvenience..... start Winows Normally...etc" message, I have tried
all start options; safe mode, safe mode with command prompt etc. but
everytime Windows will begin to start but then a blue screen appears
for a couple seconds then the laptop shuts down. There is quite a lot
of text on the blue screen but as it's only there for a few seconds I
can't read all of it. It starts with; "A problem has occurred...... "
then at the bottom it says; Technical Information: Stop ..followed by
a lot of numbers which I can not read because it only shows it for a
couple second.

All this started with a virus that somehow my brother managed to let
loose on the computer within an hour. I lost vital internet contact
with my Mother after that because I live in Europe and her in Canada.
3 weeks later my Mother died and now I am here in Canada to deal with
the funeral etc... I am curious what happened to the computer, if
anyone has an idea please reply.

Hi!

You should try reinstalling Windows or restoring the computer to its factory
state. I think you'll find that doing so will fix it.

Jack,

First step when a computer starts popping up the nasty XP stop screens is to run
diagnostics on the hard drive. You can download them from the drive
manufacturer's web site, except for Toshiba who have no hard drive diagnostics
available to the public. (The blithering fools!) For Toshiba, use the Hitachi
diagnostics.

Once you know that the drive is error-free, then, and only then, reinstall
Windows. Otherwise, you may be wasting your time trying to install Windows on a
failing drive... Ben Myers
