|
|
I have been running an Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard for almost two
years and have been using bios version 1302 (beta) since it came out.
My operating system is XP SP2.
At the beginning of this year I upgraded my processor to the Opteron
185, OPN:08A 185CDBOX. At the time of installation I also installed
AMD's dual-core optimizer. For several months everything worked
flawlessly and Cool-N-Quiet kept the cpu idling when I was doing nothing
more than internet browsing.
Today, Cool-N-Quiet stopped working. I noticed it because my cpu temps
at idle were higher than normal when using Cool-N-Quiet. Using AMD
Power Monitor I see both cores are running 2600Mhz at 1.35v, even though
the cpu utilization is running between 0% and 3%. Running Task Manager,
there is nothing running in the background and it also shows cpu
utilization between o% and 3%. At idle there is no activity in the
network connection.
I ran msconfig and there is no Cool-N-Quiet to be found in the startup
items. Rebooting and checking my bios, Cool-N-Quiet is enabled in the bios.
Any thoughts on where to begin tracking down this problem? |

On my A8V, it works as follows:
1. Enable cool 'n quiet in the bios.
2. Download and install the latest cpu drivers from AMD (the cpu drivers
include CnQ). I have dual core also.
3. Set the power management to 'minimal' in xp.
When I do all this, I can immediately see the temp and frequency drop but
unfortunately, there seems to be a video problem. It is documented that
using cool 'n quiet can cause video lockups which leads to computer lockups.
The only time I use CnQ is when I am not using the computer for long periods
of time, like 8 hours. I enable and disable it by changing the power
management scheme.

Geez, I should have thought of that !! Thanks !! |
I've never had any problems with video lockups in my system using any
bios version with CnQ. I'm sorry I don't have any knowledge to help you
out. |
