I have a empty 30 gig partition on my Gateway(mx 6431 notebook) and I
want to try to use the Gateway restore disk to put xp on the
partition(drive F) and then use the Vista upgrade disk to upgrade the
XP to Vista. I want to try to play with vista before I upgrade my main
partition.
Is there a way to do that? I have googled the issue and found where
people have done so, but they were using a OEM version of Vista and
not the upgrade version.
Thanks

docfl, there's a workaround for your situation. Install Vista on the target partition (F?), do not enter the product key and do not "register online". Once installed, install Vista again and it will see the first installation of Vista as a Windows OS to upgrade.
Ensure that you choose the correct partition for the Vista installation.

I tried to do that, I put the restore disk in and it never asked which
drive or partion I would like to put it on. That is the main problem I
am having.
Thanks
