I have a 939 socket MB with AMD64 dual core, 4g RAM, lots of HD, no
sound card. On-board video is turned off. Have a PCI evga Ge-Force
FX5500 wotj 128mb. Loaded the latest drivers from nvidia 5.6.7.3. Game
does not load, get the following initialization error. Plain and
simple: does my card suck? Looks like it. Reinstalled everything etc.
If I need a new card, what is minimal cost card that will work.

Did you tried latest driver from nVidia web site?

5.6.7.3? 56.73? Those drivers are three years old. Current version that'll
work with the FX5500 is 93.71:

Would this be related to your 4GB of RAM ? Maybe an address
map issue of some sort ? Are the symptoms the same with only
2GB present ?

You would think "Creating GL context" would have failed, if
OpenGL was missing entirely.

Everest is a utility that reports on various aspects of a computer.
It has a "Display:OpenGL" window, which reports OpenGL features
in the same way as your game is attempting to do. What does
Everest report - does Everest have a problem ?

Your PCI card has 128MB of memory. Is it possible that
Doom3 needs more texture memory than that ? I don't really
understand all the implications of the usage of PCI video
cards. Like, how is texture memory handled, if more than
the local video RAM is required. AGP offers its aperture,
for mapping from system memory, but I don't understand what
PCI does when you need more texture RAM.

There is a Doom3 specific article here. And they do talk about
being able to use 64MB cards, so maybe it isn't a video memory
limit.

Your card is a very underpowered, "PCI" (not even AGP), entry level video
card. You would need a higher end card to play Doom 3, which is a graphics
intensive game. Be prepared to spend some money, if that's a game you need
to play.
