Hello
I have recently purchased a ThinkPad T60 (8741HAM) which is preloaded with
Windows Vista Business. I can get it connected to my wireless router (Belkin
F5D7630au4A) using WEP (128 bit), but would like to connect with a more
secure encryption method.
The router only supports WEP, WPA-PSK and WPA with RADIUS authentication. I
would like to use WPA-PSK but the laptop doesn't seem to support it. I tried
using WPA-Personal and WPA-Enterprise but they fail to connect. I have
upgraded the firmware in both the laptop and the router.
On the Windows Vista Product Overview for IT Professionals page
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa906027.aspx), it states
that "Personal networks at home or in small businesses can also be more
secure through WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK using a pre-shared key. The capabilities
of the wireless network card are examined by Windows Vista, and the most
secure protocol is chosen by default when creating a new wireless network".
This seems to indicate that Vista has the ability to use WPA-PSK. However,
when I configure the wireless connection, I don't get the option to use this
encryption method. The IBM / Lenovo web site (and any other web site that I
have come across) does not specify which wireless encryption methods the
laptop supports.
The most logical conclusion that I can arrive at from reading the above
quote is that the wireless network adapter in the laptop does not support
WPA-PSK. Can anyone out there confirm that I have arrived at the correct
conclusion? If not, how do I get it to work?

Your router is the issue. To enable a particular security model, you
need to select whatever is available in the router setup, 192.168.X.1
where X is either 1 or 0. If the router supports your desired protocol,
your notebook network card will likely support it also when you View
Wireless Networks, and select your network. You set the key in the
router, and duplicate it in the notebook wireless connection setup.
