All About RAW
Warren Block, June 2007
(Note: "RAW" must always be capitalized to show the appropriate
reverence. Unbelievers may claim it's not an acronym or even a file
format. These doubting skeptics may even go so far as to suggest that
those three majestic uppercase letters are just a word that means
"unprocessed". Shun these fools, as they obviously don't know anything
about the state of the art of photography.)
What Is RAW?
RAW is a miraculous digital format which will make all your pictures
better.
In the past, jpeg format was used for most digital pictures. jpeg is a
format designed to remove all the detail, color, and composition from
your photos. (Never capitalize any form of "jpeg", even if it is a file
format, an acronym, and sometimes a file extension. Using upper case
would show more respect than it deserves.)
RAW is the exact opposite of jpeg, going far beyond just fixing jpeg's
astonishingly huge flaws.
Specific Examples
Family photos: RAW removes red-eye, flash reflections, and multiple
chins. Shots will always be in focus. Ugly pets, children, and
relatives will be adjusted to be attractive.
Landscapes: crooked horizons will be straightened. Lens flares will be
removed (unless you want them). All areas will be perfectly exposed,
from the inside of a mine to the surface of the sun--even if they're in
the same shot! There is no longer any need for UV, polarizing, or
neutral density filters--or, in fact, any filter--as RAW already does
everything they can do and more.
Animals and Flowers: RAW fixes colors, corrects missing or deformed
features, removes insects (unless that's what you wanted). Depth of
field will be shallow or deep, depending on what it should be.
Sports: RAW will always have the right thing in focus and properly
exposed. With RAW's infinite zoom and automatic exposure, you can park
miles from the event, so RAW saves you money!
How Do I Use RAW?
If your camera already has RAW, just think "RAW" and RAW will
automatically select itself (older cameras may require you physically
pushing a button). From this point, any picture you take will be
perfect, thanks to RAW!
If you have an ancient camera that doesn't have RAW, you should
immediately burn it or smash it with a hammer and buy a new camera that
does have RAW.
The good news is that you don't have to get a fancy camera, since RAW
alone will fix any problems a camera might have, like small sensors,
weak flashes, or poor lenses. So get the smallest and cheapest one.
Again, RAW saves you money! RAW RAW RAW!

Yes, Yes. Someone finally figured it out.

But, I shot everyting in jpeg (lowercase of course). Is there any
hope for me at all? Is RAW powerful enough to save me? I mean if I
display my lowly jpegs on a monitor and then take a picture of them
using RAW can it fix them? |

What Is RAW?
snip very funny material
Great information--you must have put some and and thought into it. But--
there is one piece missing: What is RAW an acronym for? I've always
assumed that it is an acronym, but I've never come across the full name.
And as the saying goes, the world needs more TLAs and FLAs.
