Bought two Netra X1 servers off of Ebay. Didn't notice that they were
missing the System Configuration Cards. And of course while trying to
install Solaris, the machine tells me it is missing this card and will
not continue. Am I really dead in the water without this card? If
yes, then....

I looked for SCC for Netra X1 on Sun's site and got no hits. I did
see this page for Netra T1:
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/Netra_T1_AC200/components.html#Card/Reader

For curiosity, I clicked Add To Cart and the site asked nothing
further.

1) How does Sun and/or the card know the system I am ordering the
card for? Isn't that the point of the card, that is knows something
about my specific unit?

2) 11 days until shipping?! Has it beens people's common experience
to be out of luck for nearly 2 weeks if they lose this card?

Thanks for any guidance. I have only one other Sun server with a SCC
and until now took it for granted.

Most likely... Why in the world would they be missing anyway? Odd.

Should be the same card.

The point of the card is the same as the IDProm in older systems. It
holds the hostid of the system. Ie. if you have something licensed for
the hostid of that system, and that system dies, you can move the card
to a spare, the spare gets that hostid, and the licensing can follow.
There's not much point in it otherwise. I can't say that I've even
touched any of mine after I first saw systems coming with them and
took it out to look at it. Older systems could have the MAC address on
them as well, although newer ethernet cards have burned-in-ethernet addresses.

The installer could be complaining that the ethernet card has no MAC
address without the SCC, and won't try to bring a system up with a
missing MAC address on a network.

Its pretty hard to lose? They are zip-tied into the reader as shipped
by sun on the X1. I'd dare say that hardly anybody ever touches them,
removes them or loses them.

I see. So the SCC is machine-specific for the benefit of the server
owner. Cool deal, but a little unfortunate for me I suppose. But, it
doesn't necesarily mean that I need the original SCC for these
specific machines to fix my problem. Any one will do.

I suppose that the previous owners of the machines may have yanked the
cards for the reason you described...to maintain the same id's,
perhaps for machines that they replaced these X1's with (maybe for
software licensing). I bought these machines from a hardware reseller
on Ebay. The boxes could have changed hands once or a dozen
times....and someone along the way saw value in the cards evidently.

Bummer. Looks like I will have to buy them from someone, Sun I
suppose. The cost of this used hardware just went up.

Go to the page for the Netra X1:

http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/Netra_X1/components.html

Under Card/Reader there is a Buy button for the System Configuration Card.
The price is coming up as $27.
The SCC is the same as the Netra T1 AC200 / DC200.

It's basically an NVRAM on a smart card.
So your system will use the Host ID and MAC address of the card you buy.
All the OBP variables will be configured to the default settings.

Right, any SCC should work.

MemoryX.net carries them, most likely for less than Sun charges.
