Hi all and thanks in advance for reading this.
I own an IBM TP770E that was stored somewhere in the back
for about 3 Month. When I tried ro re-animate it, it responded
with error 161 and 163 immediately after Power on. I figured
out that a new backup battery was required and so I installed
a new battery which does have the correct Voltage of about 3.2V
However, the Problem still persists. I cannot get around the
161/163 errors. It always results in a picture with a Hand in
a circle, crossed with a single line, followed by the word ERROR
followed by 161 and 163 ==> pointing to a book icon which might
be in terpreted as: "Take a look into the manual"
The Hwardware manual just says for these error codes:
Follow the instructions on the screen. *grrr* (Tight loop)
I cannot manage to get into BIOS by any means to set the Date
an time and what else might be neccessary.
IBM/Lenovo is of no Help as they either ask you for a several
100 Bucks to answer any maily or require that the TP is under
Warranty *arrg*
What am I doing wrong? Is there anything I have overlooked?
Btw. There is a request for a passord when booting. I assume
that it is the PowerON Password but I cannot remember whether
I set one. I answer the password request with the Enter key
and got the OK Sign, so I assume that there is no password
problem at all.
Any help would be very much apreciated or else my good old 770
is toast :-(

Thanks James for the tip but exactly that was what I was doing
all the time with not success at all. Sequence is as follows:
I press and hold F1 while powering on the device
The error code appears and it comes up with the password request
I hit enter key and it responds with the OK (in a circle) sign
After that I get caught in that infamous error message screen
(161/163 ERROR)
No way out.
There are a Cancel and OK Button for no reason, whatever you do
it sticks with the error message screen.

James, the clue came from you proposed http://forum.thinkpads.com.
For whatever reason, the supervisor password was set in my TP and
after trying all the passwords I usually remember, I manage to get
it up and running.
There seem to be NO indication on IBM Thinkpads of the fact that
a supervisor password may be/is required except that one cannot
use it anymore.
Thanks a lot, Peter |

Need new clock battery. Then Set date and time.
The last one I replaced was a $13 part.
After one or 2 more reboot cycles, it'll be fine. |
