I recently purchased a 4 GB "Excalibur" USB microdrive from Micro
Center. It works just fine in Windows 2000 and XP, and also works
fine in Linux (PCLinuxOS), even though that was not mentioned as
a supported platform.

The problem is that it's also advertised as supporting Windows 98
Second Edition, with drivers that can be downloaded from the
manufacturer's website. I downloaded and installed the drivers, and
Windows told me that the driver database was being rebuilt with the
additional drivers. However, after rebooting, then plugging in the
drive, Windows tells me it cannot find any appropriate drivers.

I emailed the tech support, but almost a week has gone by with no
response. Since my 30 day return period was about to expire, I
returned the unit to Micro Center and requested an exchange, just
in case the problem was in the drive. I alerted the store personnel
that I suspected the problem was actually with the drivers from the
website, but told them I could get no response from tech support,
and I was desperate to try something before the end of the return
period. I also reminded them that, according to their salesperson,
the "Excalibur" brand products are a "house brand" from an
affiliated company, and the lack of response from tech support
was not good.

The exchange unit works no differently from the first unit, so I still
can't use it with Win98SE.

Does anybody else have any experience with the product?

Some older devices can not support USB devices more than 2GB. Could that
be your problem?

Good question, but, no, I don't think that's it. In both laptops
where I've tried it,
Win98SE recognizes a 60 Gb USB drive with no problems.

By the way, I take back what I said about Linux. I was confusing my
new hardware
purchases. Linux is also supposed to be supported, but not
automatically, and I
haven't spent the time getting it to work yet.

It's also possible that the drive is formatted NTFS instead of FAT32.
Windows 9x can't access NTFS drives.

Well, they would have to be foolish to advertise it to work on Win98
and format the drive NTFS. smile Nevertheless, I did check. Windows XP
reports that it's a FAT32
volume.

Thanks for the ideas, but I still have no solution.
