I currently have a AMd Althon XP 2500+ computer with a Gigabyte
GA-7VT600 motherboard with KT600 Chipset.

I am considering updating the hard disk in this unit but I cannot find
what is the largest Hard size that this will recognise.
I have looked on the Gigabyte website but I can not find in info
opther than Bios updates which do not mention Hard disk Size

I tried to install a 320Gb Hard disk and either I jumered it wrong or
it was too big, as it was not recogised. I checked the jumpers and
they appeared correct, so I suspect HD was too big.

I know I can install a program to fix the problem or get a new Hard
disk controller, but I would like to find out what limits to disk size
exists.

Does anyone know where I can find out the maximum Hard disk size for
this motherboard

If you want to add more drive space than the BIOS
is configured for, remember that drives connected as
USB devices have no such limit. (My Win98 system
BIOS cannot handle drives larger than 130 Gb: but
my 230 Gb ext drive is OK because it appears
merely as a USB device.)

Essential information is missing here. Unless your
320 Gb drive was pre-formatted, we need to know
what partition app. you used (in order to create a
logical drive visible to Windows.)

That board should natively support 320GB and beyond since it
has 48bit LBA support.

Recheck your jumpers and try another data cable. I checked
Gigabyte's bios notes and didn't see any mention of HDD
issues, but if you can confirm positively that everything
else works properly (data, cables and jumpering), you might
also update the bios if it weren't at the last revision
released, just in case they fixed some bug but didn't make
mention of it in the notes... just be sure the system is
stable beforehand and I would disconnect the drive before
trying it, just in case there is some problem with it. It
is possible a small % of drives are faulty as received, if
you have another system in which to try it, do so.

Where was it not recognized?
There is "probably" a capacity limit jumper on the drive
which would limit it to 32GB. As a test _only_ you could
temporarily jumper it to 32GB to see if it showed up, but do
not then proceed to use it, jumper back to normal mode
first. Also some jumper settings charts are awkwardly
diagrammed, perhaps they have it poorly illustrated and this
led to a misjumpered setting.

You didn't even tell us what brand/model of drive or whether
it's PATA or SATA interface, and if SATA, if that controller
is enabled in the bios (I would only assume PATA was enabled
in bios already).

Thanks for that. I have the HD installed in a USB case and it is OK,

but I am looking to find out what the maximum size is.
From your comments it sounds like I could install a 120gb drive OK

It was not recognised in the BIOS, so did not show up in windows

storage Manager to enable partitioning.
It actually was formatted as when I installed the 320gb in the USB
case it did not need to be formatted

Drive is a Seagate Barracuda7200.10 320 Gb Ultra ATA.(PATA)

It was installed on the same cable as a WD 80Gb, and yes I did change
the jumper on WD from master alone to Master with Slave

Seagate jumpering shows Master with no jumper, slave with jumper.

I thought normally there should be a jumper for Master and a Seperate
jumper for slave, not just off for Master and on for slave

The WD should have one jumper setting for "Single", one for
"Master w/Slave" and one for "Slave".

It is not clear from your description, do you now have the
Western Digital on the end of the PATA cable jumpered as
Master and the Seagate on the middle jumpered as Slave?

You might also try jumpering both to "Cable Select".

Also try running the Seagate Discwizard diagnostics,
available for download from their website if it didn't come
with the drive.
